Mangalore, Jul 2: “None of elite and rich is involved in any communal clashes in the coastal Karnataka. Only people from lower strata of the society are involved in these clashes and end up in jails”, said M G Hegde, president of Sahodarara Vedike.

He was speaking at the protest meet organized by Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations' in front of the deputy commissioner's office on Monday July 2 evening.

Both Muslim and Hindu youth should bear in mind that people from rich and higher classes are promoting communal clashes by provoking the poor and downtrodden.  The rich never involve themselves in any clashes; instead they study in the reputed institutions and retain power in the society. Hence, young men should not become sword in the hands of these people, he advised.

“When you come to the street, forget your religion and practice one religion; that is national religion. Everybody should hold national flag which includes colors of all religions,” he said..

No police can guard Sanatana Dharma which has a history of 5 thousand years. This Dharma has no Gurus like others religions have. But, it has still retained its identity only because of its ideology, he said.

“It is not easy to win over communalism because we have no national leaders now. All leaders restrict their leadership only for their community. Hence, mass leadership and mass struggle is essential. Moreover, a counseling centre should be opened for these fanatics,” he suggested.

Ronald Colaco, president of the Federation said that, leaders of Sangh Parivar are alleging that Christian missionaries are involved in forceful conversion. But, there is no truth in it. Only, Dalits who suffered humiliations because of social discrimination are joining Christianity. In Christian religion, there is no discrimination between a chairman and watchman. Inspired by these characteristics, many Dalits have joined Christian religion. Before shouting about conversion, let them solve the social discriminations which have been practiced since thousands of years, he challenged.

Ummer U H, secretary of Central Beary Sahitya Parishat said that the atrocities on minorities have been increasing in the recent past, since the community has failed to raise their voice against the communalism in the initial stages, he alleged.

“We were silent since many years. Hence, our political leaders are of the opinion that, Karnataka would also be converted like Gujarat as Narendra Modi did there,” he opined..

“Two years ago, a Hajabba was assaulted by a Sangh Parivar leader after parading him naked. However, the prime accused in this case has been elected as the member of municipal council in Udupi, now.  It shows how powerful the communal forces active in gaining key positions in civic services, Ummer stated.

More than a thousand agitators participated in this protest.  A memorandum was submitted to A G Bhat, headquarter’s assistant urging the state government to take action against the accused, at the earliest. A memorandum was also submitted to Yogish Bhat, MLA  who attended the protest. Yogish Bhat condemned the attack on Carmelite priest Fr Sylvester Pereira and assured of bringing this incident to the notice of Nagaraj Shetty, district in-charge minister of DK.

Stany Alvares, Santosh D’Costa and Arun D’Souza Ajekar compered the programme.

These sangh lumpen elements have gone berserk, there is  a tacit support from BJP politicians. Its time christians put their strong protest not just limiting a usual petition to the DC, but see that every criminal involved in this barbaric attack severely punished. Christians must make use  of all available means to this.  We should make use of internet and make our voice heard loud and clear.

Most prominent newspapers have online editions Christians must post their anguish effectively in them.  Public online communities like orkut, myspace, meri news should be used swiftly condemning these attacks.

TOWARDS A CHRISTIAN GUARDIAN COUNCIL Considering the seriousness of the issue, I have a proposal which I do hope the members of our community will find it acceptable. We have quite a few exceptionally eminent men amongst us, distinguished personalities with clean reputation like Retd.Justice Michael Saldanha, Ret.IG of Police FTR Colaco and Ret. IG of Police Maxwell Pereira and may be a few more non-political personalities likewise.

Let His Lordship the Bishop of Mangalore, or Mr.Walter Nandalike of Daijiworld kindly take the initiative and bring them together and form a Guardians Council which can also serve as an influential body which can act in times of crisis., including impressing upon the State or Central Government whenever the need arises. Perhaps if this body can be formed immidiatly, they can compel the State Government to haul up the culprits involved in the attack on the Carmelite Priest Fr.Silvester., and bring them to justice including the sympathizers as well as admirers of Dara Singhs. The community can also look forward to wise leadership from these eminent lay personnel with a clean, unblesmished and distinguished track record of their own.

The main accused had earlier admitted that the alleged assault unfortunately took place because of a mistaken identity. These protests without knowing the real reasons may feed the flame of communal disharmony and conflict.

Coastal Karnataka has experienced many episodes of communal violence. All of these have been associated with political gain. Making prompt & accurate information available to the public could prevent confusions.
