Udupi, Oct 1: NCC and NSS students of Milagres College, Kallianpur organized a massive awareness campaign in the form of a bike rally here on Thursday October 1, the day compulsory helmet rule for students came into effect.

Fr Stany B Lobo flagged off the rally at the college campus. The rally passed through Santhekatte, Ambagilu, Gundibailu, city bus stand, Diana circle, Jodukatte, Brahmagiri circle and culminated at SP's office in Bannanje. The students sitting pillion on two-wheelers carried messages promoting road safety.

Addressing the students, SP Annamalai said that he was extremely thankful to the college principals as well as students for conducting such a useful programme. "I am hopeful and confident about the success of the compulsory helmet rule. All college principals have shown their support by giving strict instructions to their students. We will concentrate more on those colleges where the rule is not being followed. By this week every college will have to enforce this rule," he said.

The district police department has issued notices to more than 32 colleges regarding compulsory wearing of helmets.

Speaking to media persons regarding license documents of riders, he said, "We have not taken any stern action on this so far. From this week on we will carry out a document checking operation. All principals have agreed to it."

"Udupi district police has received good response from Hassan and Tumakuru for the campaign. We are focusing on social media also to spread awareness. The department has reached out tomore than 15,000 students so far," he added.

SP Annamalai appreciated the students' efforts and said, "We feel motivated to offer more services to society. This is just the beginning; more rules are yet to take shape. If the compulsory helmet rule achieves hundred percent success in its implementation, then Udupi will shine as the first city in India in terms of following government rules.

"If the government implements any plans for our good, then rules and regulations should be voluntarily practised," the SP said.

Dr Neri Cornelio, Milagres College principal promised that he would always support the police department and said that such student-friendly campaigns will help to save lives.

P Yuvaraj CMC president, Janardan Thonse, town planning president, Rovers leader Dr Jayaram, NSS officer Nityanada, NCC officer Marvin D’Souza, Dy SP Chandrashekhar and others were present. More than 200 students participated in the rally.

Not only students every two wheel raiders & co commuter should wear helmets voluntarily for their own safely. Students response to the call of Udupi SP to wear helmets is highly appreciable. Hope others also follow students and wear helmets.

Normally some (or many) students due to excitement of driving and immaturity drive very fast, endangering themselves and others. It is better a rule should be made that Students below 18 years should not be given gearless license. As per present rule gearless license can be given above 16 years of age and with gear license is given above 18 years of age. In colleges parking charges should be taken for 2 wheelers. If govt provide cycles at cheap rate then most of the poor and middle class students will definitely use cycles.

If they want to raise awareness for wearing helmets then they should do it by wearing proper full face helmets. I can see in pics above, many of them especially girls who have some cheap unscientifically designed helmets. The protection from those helmets are limited... maybe none.

Good initiative , well thought - it should not end up as a procession/event/show. Noted that some participants are riding bike without helmet even in this promoting event, in front of police. Some are busy taking selfies to promote themselves in FB and Whatsapp. Please dont send wrong singals. Daiji readers , Please take good message ignoring those who did not wear helmet to safeguard interest of yourself and your family.

Very HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS to all the students who took part in this great rally...and also a Warm Salute and Big Vanakkam to SP ANNAMALAI SIR. Hope the message of the rally would reach far and wide not only in Kalyanpur and other colleges nearby and around but also far and wide throughout the coastal region and also the whole state as well.

It was very touching to see the glorious smile on the face of all students both male and female who took part in the rally especially the sportive abhaya dressed female students.

I have personal experience in life of saving my won life thanks to wearing the Helmet and I do hope this gesture of the students will go a long way in saving many a precious lives in the region.

God Bless One and all of you

Safety first? People die even if they wear helmets? Only GOD can save you from accidents! Helmets can only reduce the risk of your head being crushed. Only an act for traffic police to mint "Money"

when you fell sick you go to doctor right? why you go there? why dont you tell "only god can save you".

People of kind minded are in rally too. They attending safety awareness rally but not wearing safety helmet (Pic 13, 14, 21, 22, 23, 30, 31).

Introducing, coming into force and following the rules are different things. If you don't make it compulsory then it is an one day show.

Good initiative apart from that speed limit has to be implemented for all vehicles even if it takes time to reach destinations. Offenders should be punished with cancellation of license for the second time fault. Careless driving which results in death and injury should be subjected to rigorous imprisonment and cancellation of license permanently

Dear Two wheeler Riders, Yes I can see all are wearing helmets in the rally organized for “Helmet rule comes into force” But in reality how many of you wear helmets. I had seen number of young two wheeler riders hook the helmet to the hand and drive. Always remember, you are wearing helmet for your own safety. Make it mandatory even your drive one KM in two wheeler. Safety first.
