Mangaluru, Oct 5: In a case of alleged police brutality on a minor, a 14-year-old boy has complained that he was beaten up by two cops for no apparent reason while returning from a movie theatre.

Prajwal (named changed), a student of 7th standard at a government school, stated in his complaint that on the night of October 3, he and his friends, after attending tuitions, had been to watch the 9.45 pm show of a Kannada movie at Big Cinemas in Bharath Mall. They came out at 1 am.

As per the complaint, when they were walking along the road in front of the auto rickshaw stand near KSRTC bus stand, two men came in a bike, stopped the boys and demanded to know where they were going at that hour of the night. The boys told them that they had been to tuitions.

At this, the men said that they were cops and allegedly slapped Prajwal and also hit him on the thigh with a stick. They also reportedly abused the boys, calling them 'thieves' roaming around at night and snatched away the boy's mobile phone. When Prajwal asked the cop to give back his phone, he was allegedly beaten.

Thereafter, the boys went to a nearby canteen belonging to someone they knew, and were admitted to the hospital the same night.

The cops reportedly were from Urwa police station.

A complaint in this regard was filed in Kadri police station. The boy and his parents may also approach the police commissioner and the child welfare committee, sources said.

Some parents like Jessy, UAE, seem to encourage breaking of law by police - in the name of teaching discipline to young people.

Upon reaching puberty, children want to assert independence. Children want to be treated as adults. That is the natural order.

The children can no more be controlled like the babies.

So, the parents need to change their attitude towards their own children, and start treating the children like adults.

If the parents are not capable of this change, children look for ways to rebel.

Now, the parents can't outsource the 'control and discipline' to the teachers and police for their own fault.

Teachers and police don't exist to discipline any kids despite what the parents wish.

Teachers and police must follow law at all times.

I am not supporting any party or PM or CM, but we are seeing more and more instances of police doing things which could be handled better. I appeal to the PM to push for police reforms in consultation with all parties if india has to have a good name in the world, not just economic reforms.

First of all it has to be ascertained whether they were genuine or fake policemen. They claimed to be cops without showing any identification. Has anybody seen or heard of police patrolling on bikes during late nights? As far as I know, police patrol the city streets on jeeps or 4 wheelers. This needs to be confirmed with the concerned police authorities. Secondly, they called the boys thieves and thrashed them for asking back their mobile. On the contrary the so-called cops turned out to be thieves by snatching the boy’s mobile. If they were real cops, they could have told the boy to collect his mobile from the police station the following day.

I TOTALLY DISAGREE YOUR COMMENTS. NIGHT OR DAY... IT'S A FREEDOM OF HUMAN TO WALK AROUND. ONLY PEOPLE BEING CONSERVATIVE AND INTROVERTS CAN TRY TO GET WRONG SPECULATIONS OR MESSAGES OUT OF IT. WHAT IS WRONG WITH NIGHT AND DAY. WHEN YOU HAVE A PURPOSE YOU NEED TO WALK AROUND. GROW UP. NEED TO COME OUT OF OUR SHELLS. I CONDEMN THE PICKPOCKETERS OF THE POLICE STATIONS IN KHAKI DRESS WHO ATTACKED THE MINOR BOY. CHARGE THOSE COPS WITH IPC AND PUT THEM BEHIND BARS. I CALL UPON THE CHILD-LINE TO TAKE UP THE MATTER SERIOUSLY AND PUNISH THE ERRING COPS UNDER VARIOUS SECTIONS. THERE IS ALSO AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF CRIMES COMMITTED BY THE COPS THEMSELVES ON DUTY SPECIALLY AT NIGHTS. INSTEAD OF PROTECTING THEY END OF PICKPOCKETING. HOW DISGUSTING...!!!

If you have teen age kid or little older the real life incident. You can easily write comments from UAE. Once you send you kid out from UAE to study you will experience the real fact. Dear madam, it is not easy to handle kids and forget your thinking of controlling.... Dont just think that your kids will behave same as you behaved. God bless the parents who are experiencing these situations.

Dear Jessy, So much for your pretty harsh views, but, as explained by you, with teenagers that doesn't at all work like what you have said, teenage is the age of discovery and rebellion, confusion, AN EXPLOSION OF HORMONES, it should be handled very very sensibly!! If you FORCE YOUR COMMANDS UPON THEM, it is going to surface out in some other way! Only love and making them understand formula works on teenagers!!!

i agree with jessy,i remember kannada proverb "kidavaagi baggadhu maravaagi baggalla"
parents should teach discipline at this age later they will come to know about its value, if the boys are from hostel, studying in puc or degree its manageable 7th std is too early for them to go for night show till 1am.

Walking on the street by a group of children at 1 AM is definitely not normal, the beat marshals might have got some 'ulta pulta' reply from these teenagers and hence got the pasting!! It is normal for the police to behave in a tough manner at nights when they are not satisfied with the answers given by the concerned persons!!

However we might think, any policeman if he gets an evasive reply (that too at such an odd hour) will definitely raise his hand on the concerned person to show his power considering the amount of robberies and other criminal activities taking place in the night!!

Parents should instead question the kids why they were out at that late and instill a sense of discipline in the kids rather than blaming the police!!

The above is a personal opinion based on the newsreport!!

If the cops were really duty minded and good citizens then they should have asked the boys to provide mobile or land line no. of their parents and should have immediately enquired with them. Instead they did all these wrong things. Definitely they should be punished for this. There should be a proper code of conduct of police men how to enquire with common people.

    1. Think they were night beat police.
    2. Think the reply given by boys not satisfactory!(there is some catch here).
    3. In any case the night beat police should not have hammered them the way they did!
In my times 8.30 pm was the limit.
Till I grew up and saw Lata, Rita, Diana,Rosy, Daisy and finally settled for Loveena. In between-aa? There were Reenas and Veenas..O.k.?
What beauties man..really!!That is why I laugh at the Miss India?/Universe winners nowadays! You heard comments about A. Vaz'z make up the other day- didn't you?
There was no make-up those days.
What you saw..you got..I mean saw..

    Pure radiant beauties.
So with those around 8.30 slowly became 10.30 and beyond! After seeing so many how can you not be a 'Poet'? Understood?

THE BIG CINEMA CAN SHOW MOVIES IN THE MID NIGHT...WHAT A JUSTIFICATION TO BLAME THE PARENTS...THE POLICE PERSONNEL IS TO BE SUSPEND IN THE THIS MATTER AND THE BOY IS NOT ALONE HE IS WITH HIS FRIENDS....HE IS A CITIZEN. IF THE COPS HAVE LATHI DOES NOT MEAN TO HIT ANYONE HE LIKE... THE BOY MUST BE GIVEN COURAGE TO MOVE AROUND IN THE DAY OR NIGHT WITHOUT FEAR AND THE POLICE IS TO GIVE PROTECTION NOT SHOW THEIR MIGHT ON KIDS.

couple of factors here. First thing, we are not sure it was police who really attacked these 2 boys. I suspect they were not corps. Second thing, why the hell these boys , so called students, roam at KSRTC at that odd hours of 1 AM. absolutely negligence of the parents. So, boys , so called students, focus on your studies and ensure you are back at home by a descent time. Don't wander here and there at such odd hours like 1 AM and all. you could be the victim of any crimes, attack, theft, robbery, murder... anything. So, before blame anybody, please ensure you are back at home with you parents by a descent time.

    Sukumar,

Police beat only if they get negative and aggressive response when they demand.
You may blame police for beating mercilessly but when lot's of crimes take place we blame police for their negligence.

I remember those olden days when first anti-Hindi riots were taking place and we group 5(college days) got such a beating because we ventured out to assess the public damage. Enough for life time. We could not walk for three days. But our parents did not blame police, rather they said for our mistakes we got right lesson.

It appears to me that the "two men came in a bike" who, after demanding answers from the boys bo doubt authoritatively, told the boys that they were cops, clearly indicates that the men were not wearing uniform.

If the cops did not wear uniform, it was their duty to inform the boys that they were cops BEFORE demanding any types of answers.

So far as I understand, it is illegal for the police to exercise their authority without providing their identification badges/cards.

For this reason, if the boy responded rudely, he was still not breaking a law. No stranger has a right to demand answers from another. Especially minors.

Additionally, the community is not a servant of the police. It is the other way around.

I sincerely hope the boy's parents hire a couple of sincere lawyers and take the matter to court. Note that the police have broken laws here. While publishing the news in the media is good, the matter must be taken to a court of law.

    I recommend the high court.
