Power-saving LED bulbs to light homes in Karnataka from Jan

Bengaluru, Oct 6: It is time to say goodbye to the existing electricity bulbs in your homes with LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs from January 1, 2016.

The interesting part of the scheme being worked by Karnataka’s Energy Department is that the domestic users can pay the cost of replacing the existing bulbs in their homes with LED bulbs in one go or through the monthly electricity consumption bills.

Replacement of fluorescent bulbs (tubes and compact fluorescent lamps or CFLs) will save at least 50 per cent of power consumption and reduce monthly electricity bill, says a calculation worked out by the Energy Department.

The Union Power Ministry’s undertaking, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), will be implementing the LED domestic and street lighting project which estimated to cost Rs 2,600 crore.

In Bengaluru alone, there are approximately 4.5 lakh street lights consuming 70 MW of per night. The City’s street light bill is around Rs 14 crore a month.

Karnataka’s Energy Minister D K Shivakumar has decided to launch a scheme for LED bulb distribution under the domestic efficient lighting programme in the State in January next.

The minister chaired a two-hour long meeting with manufacturers of LED bulbs and lights to work out the details of the implementation of the project. About 40 representatives of LED manufacturing firms attended the meet.

The representatives of LED manufacturing firms said LED bulbs have a very long life, almost 50 times more than ordinary bulbs, and 8-10 times that of CFLs, and therefore provide both energy and cost savings in the medium term.

Under the scheme being worked out by the Energy Department, 10 LED bulbs of 9 volts each, costing in the range of Rs 90 to 100 a bulb, will be provided to all domestic consumers and the amount will be recovered (Rs. 10 each) from their monthly electricity bill.

The current open market retail price of a LED bulb is in the range of Rs. 350-400.

"We hope the scheme will prove a hit as it will be economical to the domestic consumers in the long run and will also help the State in substantially reducing the energy demand due to the likely reduced power consumption," Shivakumar said.

by spread such rumors the govt. will be sell the hydro power, cooking gas to other states as they are under pressure from high command. Will the govt. be distributing LED bulbs to citizens first? This is a scam to sell the made in Karnataka products ( hydro power, electricity generated from gas)to other states.

In India any LED lamp manufacturers are there...!!!??? May be assembling the parts bought from china...!!! In China there are bad as well as Good manufacturers..Like Osram, Sylvaniya...Leds are manufactured in China but under the supervision of world renowned brands. Who knows our Karnataka Government will collude with whom to make another scam. Even if they make LEDs imported from china tax free, they need not spend any money but consumers will get at a cheaper price...!!!???

It is mentioned 9V instead of 9W and the brightness of the light depends on the lumens and not on wattage by which a common man always gets puzzled. Most lamp mfgrs outsource in bulk from China, the quality of which is not good and life is short!! For the heavy voltage fluctuation in DK the life expected is more shorter!!

Good opportunity with a project worth 1000s of crores for the handlers!!! Jai Hind!!

    Rudolf.
Absolutely right. Similar claims and offers were made while phasing out incandescent bulbs earlier. They hardly used to last the six months warranty. And when replaced the warranty was given only for the remaining period of the first purchase. what a joke. To go and get the replacement the cost would be more than the savings and how many times!!!! People better beware some one higher up is getting his/her pockets well greased

lED Is good Idea but nobody wants to believe authorities. Instead of buying bulk better to buy few and check how LEDS behave in our conditions. The company producing much be a good one who can respect the terms in case of failure as particularly these LEDS are supposed to work for a very long time/many years .

I am a user of LED lamps. I experienced breakdown of the chokes of the LED bulbs and the replacement of them also cost equally the cost of new bulb.

Indeed it is a very good theme serving two purposes. Saving on domestic electricity bills and saving of power consumption.

It is however yet to be seen the consumer response to this idea.

Idea is very good….. At least one such Minister is interested in implementing the Central Govt’s idea to save energy which becomes vital in Karnataka now. But as usual due to middlemen intervention in everything….we need to wait and watch how far this scheme being implemented successfully in our State!!!!

But the fact is, No Indian manufactures these bulbs in India and at times it is assembled here. Every part or the full bulb is imported from China and if the government wants to give the bulb at Rs. 90, then I would say the quality will be very low and brightness also not good.

Recently I bought four 12W LED bulbs which were said to be equivalent to 24 W CFL but on fixing I found the brightness nowhere near even to a 9 W CFL bulb!. Lumens too were just 840!!!. Also the capacitor of one bulb blasted!. It appears that some scam may be involved in forcibly replacing bulbs!.
