Italian clubs lead race for Brazilian teenager

Rio de Janeiro, Oct 21 (IANS): Highly-rated teenager Gabriel Jesus has drawn interest from top football clubs in Italy, according to Brazilian media reports.

But any bid to take the 18-year-old away from Palmeiras could be stymied by a 30 million-euro buyout clause, Xinhua quoted the Uol portal as saying on Tuesday.

Gabriel was promoted to Palmeiras' first team in January after scoring 37 goals in 22 matches for the club's U-17 team last year.

He has since made 28 appearances for the eight-time Brazilian Serie A champions and scored seven goals.

Despite being eligible for Brazil's U-20 team, Gabriel was earlier this year called up for the national U-23 side, scoring on his debut against Republica Dominicana.
