Mangaluru, Nov 12: Commissioner of Police S Murugan launched the 'Car-free day' movement and T-shirt related to it brought out by Mangaluru Bicycle Club on Thursday, November 12 at police commissioner's office in city.

Addressing the media S Murugan said "Car-free day is celebrated in many countries. It is a regular practice for them. Very few motor vehicles are used at Infosys campus in Mysuru. The traffic situation is going to be chaotic in 5-10 years time from now. Mangaluru cannot be a pollution-free city unless people come forward to support this project. 'Car-free day' will be observed on every second Saturday of each month."

"All cannot give up vehicles for this cause, but many can contribute for the same. Though the police cannot move from one place to another without the help of the vehicles, we will do our best in supporting this project. This is a very good project and we have to think about our kids and have to give them good things, not poisonous environment." Murugan added.

Murugan remembered his childhood days by mentioning that bicycle was their main mode of transport and those were the good old days.

"By tying up with the Mangaluru traffic police department, the 'Car-free day' can run smoothly. Number of vehicles is going up every day in Mangaluru. People face lot of problems while going to office in their vehicles. By following this project, we can prevent air and environmental pollution. Every person must rest his or her motor vehicle for at least one day in a month." Murugan concluded.

Kishan Bangera, member of Mangaluru Bicycle Club said, "The concept of this project is not to promote cycling, but to reduce the traffic and pollution. There are people waiting to join this project. Mangaluru is becoming a smart city and if the bicycle track comes, then it will be very helpful."

Ganesh Nayak the owner of Jyothi Cycle Company and convener of Mangaluru Bicycle Club said, "Cyclists face lot of problems while riding. They do not have separate track and they are abused while riding on the road. We are also planning to hold awareness programmes in the educational institutions."

Sadashiva Rao, Donald Menezes and others were also present on this occasion.

Sir, Private vehicles should not be allowed inside the city. A private car parking should be there at Kottara Chowki, Near KPT and at Pumpwell. The private Car Owners should park their cars there and use public transport to enter the city.

This is good idea mooted by our police commissioner Murugan. But before that he must think about crime free city before dream of Mangaluru city becoming smart city.Unless there is a strict control on drug/ganja abuse, crimes, burglary, robberies, rapes, the dream of Mangaluru city becoming smart city will remain merely a dream.Apart from all the above issues, there are plenty of other issues to be addressed.Definitely Mangaluru is developing and subsequently the number of cars also will get increased. The entire traffic system/rules to be restructured,re-hauled with proper foot paths for the pedestrians, drainage system etc etc. Then only we can think about some constructive improvements/developments.With the existing infrastructure, one cannot imagine even about the improvements in the city. Hygienic aspect should be given priority and paramount importance.Best of luck Murugan

Calling for bundh and force closing the shops and transport are not the solutions to the problems. This is public nuisance and public inconvenience that is avoidable. Jai Hind!

A majority of youngsters and others irrespective of age may not be knowing to ride a bicycle. Many cycle learning schools may come up. But where is the place for learning bicycle. In the present conditions many a life may be lost of people not knowing riding attempt to drive on roads. It would be better to a day as motor vehicle free day instead of car free day on a Sunday. If I am wrong kindly correct me.

FOOTPATH ON ALL MAJOR ROADS HAS STILL REMAINED A DREAM. I THINK THIS NEEDS TO BE GIVEN TOP PRIORITY IN VIEW OF SAFETY OF PEDESTRIANS. THIS IS A MUST FOR SMART CITY AS WELL.

Good initiative. But, talking about separate tracks for cyclists, many a places in mangalore there are no footpaths for pedestrians. If we have decent and behaved public transport, we don't have to travel by our own transport. Unfortunately we have sick drivers and conductors. Authorities please if you are listening kindly control those city buses and auto rickshaws.
