Mangaluru, Nov 17: In the wake demand for hike in auto rickshaw fares, a meeting was convened by deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim at his office here on Tuesday November 17 to discuss the issue. The meeting saw the participation of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) officials, auto rickshaw drivers, union leaders, social activists and the general public.

Presently, the minimum auto fare is Rs 23 for the first 1.5 kilometres and Rs 13 for every kilometre thereafter. Auto drivers can charge one-and-half-times the normal fare between 10 pm and 5 am. President of Auto Drivers’ Horata Samiti Yadav Maroli said that the hike in rates of groceries, spare parts of auto rickshaws and other commodities had been taking a toll on them and hence a hike in auto fare was necessary.

"We earn around Rs 600 a day, out of which Rs 200 has to be handed over to the auto owner, and another Rs 200 goes on fuel. We need to spend a minimum of Rs 100 on our food which we have in hotels. End of the day, we are left with only Rs 100 which is not enough to run our families, pay bills and look after our children’s education. Out of 20 spare parts used in an auto rickshaw, prices of 14 have increased considerably," he said.

Social activist Hanumanth Kamath pointed out that the price rise in daily commodities had also affected the general public and not only the auto drivers, and said that a hike in auto fares would burden the public even more. He also complained that out of about 6,000 auto rickshaws running in the city, over 600 still charge Rs 25 as minimum fare, but the police had turned a blind eye to the issue.

After hearing the opinions of all concerned, DC A B Ibrahim said that a decision would be taken in a week’s time. He also instructed the RTA to gather adequate information on the matter by then.

SP Dr Sharanappa, assistant RTO G S Hegde, and others were present.

A Request - Please don't increase the fare. It is already more than what is justified. Do compare their fare against the present fare prevailing in Mumbai. Hope you get an idea whether it is justified !

What this people want, to comfort living with family, they want to loot passengers. Do they think Auto passengers are millionaires.

Compare to Bengalore & Mumbai, here the Auto fare is almost double.

Do they think Petrol or Gas is cheaper in Bengalore & Mumbai than Mangalore & Udupi??

From Karavali Junction,Udupihighy to Manipal they are charging 150 rupees, in Mumbai Kurla Junction railway station to Char Bunglow , Andheri west they charge Rs.180 ? .

    Compare the distance.

Why no one talks about this.

Auto drivers don't adhere to the rules and regulation in Mangalore. Yes, they also have to earn for living, but not by cheating the passengers. If the fare is Rs. 34 and if you offer Rs. 40 for no change, they don't return the change instead argue for Rs.40. More over there are some take their own round about way to reach the destination of 22 Km distance to 5 Km. If offered exact fair, then they abuse you in filthy language. It's not all but majority. It's my personal experience.

What the auto drivers fail to see is if the charge is less more people will engage the auots. The fare increase actually will affect them negatively. Let them understand that. My friend in M'lore travels 4 times a day paying min. of 23 and now if that is 25, then he said he will walk the distance. Someone needs to tell them.

600 rs per day(8 hrs) that means per hour 75rs, minimum is 25-30 they charge per km , is it only 24km they cover in 8 hrs,are they joking. They are the biggest swindlers in the city.Rather the price should be kept according to the oil market, and cng auto should come cheaper and should be identified with green colour.

Auto drivers demand may be genuine but this is applicable to even common man as well. There are many retired people without any source of their income like pension like in the case of some government,semi-government and some private companies employees, have to notch out the fare from their empty pocket without any other option. When we are talking,we are talking only one side of the story and other side is left blank. As far as collecting minimum fare of 23/-for 1.5.kilo metre,to the best of my understanding no auto driver is collecting Rs 23/-from the people.Once Auto is hired, drivers are collecting straight away Rs 25/ as minimum charge from the passengers. When we ask for the balance, they simply evade the question and go away or sometimes they even shot at the passengers. This is the attitude of the auto drivers in the city. That means auto drivers are already collecting Rs 2/-more from the passengers.Under the circumstance how come the question of increasing fare comes?.Just fooling the public. The passengers are the real victims of this menace.Any logic or solution for this exploitation?

Now they will demand for a fare of 30 and then with some haggling and threats to go on strike, they know they will get an increase of 5 to make it 28, then again they will resort to the same habit of keeping back the change means the common man will have to shell 30 bucks for a 1.5 km ride, Wah re Mangluru!!

Always while pleading for rise in fares these auto rajas give the reference of petrol prices while it is well known that majority run on auto gas which is much much cheaper so the present fare is more than justified to allow another hike which will burden the already harried common man!!

Even today if when the min fare is 23, most of them do not or hesitate to return back the 2 bucks stating that they have no change or that they had to travel on a rough road or inside a cross road so in effect practically the rates they are charging at present is already 25 unless the passenger is not confronting and aggressively demands the change!!

The DC will favour the auto drivers because he never has to use auto as mode of transport as he is provided with the official vehicle. The hike in charges will affect the common man and not the DC. Also hardly people representing the general public can be seen in the pictures, even though they make the majority but no one cares for them. Many auto drivers are already charging more and are even very rude and unreasonable with the people.

Most of the Rickshaw drivers are cunning and errant. When the fuel prices were fallen, they were not ready to slash the fare. But, a little increase of petrol/Diesel, they need a revision.

Even common man also facing the inflation of groceries and commodities, not just Rik drivers.

The current minimum fare is very reasonable and an increase would burden the general public.

All autos must use meters through out Dakshina Kannada. It's really sad, that nobody questions why autos use meters only in city areas. As far as I know from talapady till Adam kudru they don't use Meters, And From Thokkottu to Konaje or anyhere that side, no autos use Meters and the rates are really different for each auto.. Some charge 10-15Rs more. What's the use of auto unions if they can't bring a uniformity in price?

It's already Rs 25 in places like Thokkottu, Kuttar, Kotekar etc. And, I believe it will be Rs 30 min charge in next few days....

Auto rates are higher than Mumbai!! Secondly the hike in essential commodities are affecting all sections of Society, but they do not have such a recourse to increase their income and manage their daily lives!!

Spare part prices should not be going up, as claimed, because of a big fall in all commodity items like metals, rubber, etc., at all time lows!!

These same auto rajas refuse to bring down even a rupee when the prices of fuel goes down drastically!! Jai Mangluru

Dear Auto Drivers see what you have quoted here below in this news:

"We earn around Rs 600 a day, out of which Rs 200 has to be handed over to the auto owner, and another Rs 200 goes on fuel. We need to spend a minimum of Rs 100 on our food which we have in hotels. End of the day, we are left with only Rs 100 which is not enough to run our families, pay bills and look after our children’s education. Out of 20 spare parts used in an auto rickshaw, prices of 14 have increased considerably," he said.

In Rupees one hundred a family cannot lead a life in Mangalore.

How then all most of the drivers earn and live with their families.

Are you auto drivers deceive the passengers to live so in all those days of your life's.
