Udupi: Baby dies in womb, family alleges hospital negligence

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (UM)

Udupi, Nov 28: A pregnant woman lost her baby in the womb allegedly due to negligence of the staff at the government hospital for women and children here on Saturday November 28.

Sumathi (30), wife of Ganesh, a resident of Palli, was seven months pregnant. On Saturday morning, she was told by the hospital that her baby had died in the womb.

It is said that Sumathi had been coming to the same hospital for the past seven months for checkup. On Thursday November 27 she came to the hospital again in the morning and was asked to wait.

Sumathi was reportedly made to sit in the waiting room all day, until around 5 pm, after which, due to constraint of space, a bed was put for her in a passage and she was admitted.

On Saturday morning, she was taken for scanning, after which it was revealed that her baby had died in the womb.

The baby was supposed to be the couple's first child after more than three years of marriage.

Soon after the unborn baby's death came to light, the family members gathered at the hospital and alleged that negligence had led to the death.

The hospital is usually overcrowded with patients and does not have enough facilities to accomodate them. When there is shortage of space, beds are put up for patients in the passage way, it is alleged.

The family members approached the town police station to file a complaint, but they were told to first lodge a complaint with the district surgeon and the health department, which they did.

Speaking to daijiworld, district surgeon Mahendra dismissed allegations of negligence by the hospital and said that the reason for the baby's death was unclear. "The lady was 28 weeks pregnant and if she had delivered, chances of survival of the baby would have been slim. She developed labour pain in the middle of the night and as we have no scanning machine in the hospital, she was sent to a private scanning centre. The report from private scanning centres is usually delayed, and in this case also it was so. However, the report showed that both the mother and baby were healthy.

"This morning when the doctor checked her, he found that the baby was still. Only then we came to know that it had died. However, there was no problem with either the baby or the mother, so the cause for death in unclear. But there has been no negligence in the hospital. We had even suggested the family to take her to Lady Goschen hospital in Mangaluru but they chose to stay here. If we had a scanning machine here, maybe this would not have happened," he added.

Rita/Germany can come and take over the hospitals in the district and manage it with all those 'Know All' people who have given their expert comments against the management of the case and the doctors and nurses who were attending to the case.
It is wrong to comment on any situation without knowing the truth.

Its shocking there is no scanning facility in a government hospital. For pregnancy case nowadays there is scanning at every visit in private hospitals to ensure healthy condition of baby.

I fully agree with the comments of Ms Rita and Ms. Asha.In all probability the patient got admitted as she was not getting baby's movements (kicks) inside her uterus-an early sign of death of baby. It is customary to admit and observe such cases. Therefore, there is no negligence on the part of treating personnel.

Sad that the couple lost the Baby. But they cant make Hospital responsible without knowing the reason.I find there is something to be cleared.First why the Lady was admitted in the Hospital.and when she came to the out Patient or in ward was she not examined till next day ?(foetal heart)when a pregnent woman was admitted in ward, cause may be anything, their duty was to check Babys heartbeat. There is no Need of scanning machine.even a stethescope or a simple faetoscope will do.rest is decided on this.I too find Hospital People are trying to hide something, explain something else.Baby might have died due to many reasons. But when she had pains why didnt they give Infusion or check immediately?Sometimes when the ward is full and nurses are having a lot of work. But I find emergency is to be attended first. Some comments here are really out of place.without knoweledge shouldnt write nonsense.Hope the couple will have a healthy Baby very soon.

please check the statistics in google at least....if not with any doctors....

there is no guarantee that every pregnant woman will deliver living baby.. anywhere in the world....... even with every possible machines.... divine intervention is beyond any doctor....

what was the negligence by doctors... if there is no space, what the doctor or nurse can do ???

why are you blaming khader or modi??? can they go & deliver every pregnant?

have some sense & logic... it was unfortunate.... but these type of unfortunate things can not be avoided whoever becomes CM, PM,HM...

even in vellore, apollo, harward , washigton..... fetus will die before birth...

because of this kind of allegations, more doctors go for defensive practice... they will suggest all possible tests.... will refer everything to lady goschen, then nimhans, then kidwai,etc....

even if you take your preganant wife to newyork or london... nobody give guarantee about healthcare... it is not an electronic device..it is not factory made...

let us pray god that the couple recover from loss & may god give them a healthy baby next time... my honest opinion.... nothing else can be done for these unfortunate situation anywhere...

may be if the mother is having any illness , it can be treated by experts ... government can give some financila assistance if required... stop blame game...

jeevan... grow up man... even if you sit in U T Khader's chair you can not do even 10% of khader is doing. have some sense mr jeevan. may god bless you.
