11 killed in Udhampur road accident


Jammu, Jan 15 (IANS): Eleven people were killed and 20 injured on Friday in a road accident in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, police said.

The accident took place at Ramnagar, 65 km from Udhampur town, when the driver lost control over the bus going to Basantgarh, Deputy Inspector General of Police Surinder Gupta told reporters. The bus fell into a deep gorge.

"Eleven people have been killed in this accident and 20 have been injured. Two injured persons have sustained critical injuries", the official said.

State chief secretary B.R. Sharma has directed the district magistrate of Udhampur district to attend the last rites of those killed in the accident.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs.1 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs.25,000 to those critically injured and Rs. 10,000 for those who did not suffer any major injury in the accident.
