Bangalore, Sep 19: Twenty-two persons have been detained in connection with the setting afire of a Chennai-bound bus in which two persons were charred to death and the attack on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's daughter's residence here.
A violent crowd torched the bus belonging to the Tamil Nadu state transport Express corporation on Hosur road on Tuesday night in protest against Karunanidhi's remarks on lord Ram in the context of the Sethusamudram project.
Four persons got into the bus after asking the passengers to alight. They later torched the vehicle by pouring kerosene on it. Police later recovered two charred bodies inside the bus.
Passengers were quoted by the police as saying that one of the victims was drunk. It was not immediately known how the second person could not come out of the bus, carrying 26 passengers.
Deputy commissioner of police (South-East), Soumendu Mukherjee told PTI that 13 persons were taken into custody for questioning based on the description of the attackers as given by the passengers.
“The mob's intention was to create a sensation. Otherwise, they would not have asked passengers to get out,” Mukherjee said.
Hours before this attack, Karunanidhi's daughter Tamizh Selvi's residence at J P Nagar was attacked by a crowd which pelted stones. They also threw pamphlets denouncing the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's remarks on lord Ram. Selvi and her husband were not at home when the incident happened on Tuesday night. Police have rounded up nine persons in connection with this incident, deputy commissioner of police (South), Alok Kumar said.
