Udupi: Drunken driving - Lucky escape for youth as car hits divider, overturns

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (UM)

Udupi, Feb 26: A youth had a providential escape in the early hours of Friday February 26 after the car he was driving hit a divider and rolled over four times before coming to a halt. The driver was allegedly drunk.

The accident took place near Inox theatre, Manipal at around 2.30 am.

The identity of the driver is not known, but police sources said that he was a student from Hyderabad studying in the first year at MIT, Manipal.

The youth was on his way from Manipal to Udupi when the accident took place.

The Fortuner car hit the divider, rolled over four times and also hit two electric poles. The impact was such that both the poles were uprooted. Luckily, the airbags in the car saved the youth and he escaped with minor injuries on the hand.

Police sources said that the youth was driving under the influence of alcohol. Soon after the accident, he went to his residence at Ishwarnagar by another car, sources said.

A case is yet to be registered in Manipal police station.

It is not clear whether the youth was trying to test the crash-proof capabilities of the car, its airbags, the road divider or the electrical poles.

I feel he will make a very good test driver for Toyota Motors, instead of wasting his talents in Manipal.

This driver of this Fortuner is fortunate he is alive after such an accident. The pictures itself shows the condition of the car and how he survived in that accident. Luckily, it happened in the middle of the night where the traffic and pedestrians are less. If it had happened there would have been deaths and injuries.

It is a matter of regret that when students should concentrate on their studies they indulge in drinking and drunken driving too.

It is pertinent that The Police take appropriate action against the erring student and suspend his license apart from the usual case that needs to be filed in Court.

Fortunately we have a very good and fearless S.P. Mr. Annamali. Nothing escapes his attention and he will take necessary action despite any any influence people may try use.

I am sure he was watching Fast & Furious during drinking sessions that night & wanted to try that out. Mohan Mangalore is right, you could make him a Brand Ambassador of Toyota - Fortuner but seize his Driving Licence. Also thank God, fortunately he was driving such a sturdy vehicle, Furtuner, else we all know what would have been his state.Parents want to give the best to their children & look what they get in return.!! Take care students & God Bless you parents, you are lucky some where
