Mangaluru: Yettinahole project - Demand for Tulunadu state natural, says Poojary

Mangaluru, Mar 12: Senior Congress leader Janardhan Poojary on Saturday March 12 said it was 'natural' for people of the coastal region to demand a separate Tulunadu state if their demands to drop the controversial Yettianahole project was not met, and that both the Congress and the BJP would be 'cursed' if a separate state were to be formed.

Addressing a press meet at the district Congress office here, Poojary said, "Is Yettinahole the only permanent solution to the irrigation and drinking water problems of Chikkaballapur and Kolar? There are other rivers too. Is the government blind? The government is meting out a stepmotherly treatment to Dakshina Kannada.

"I invite president of Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha Kodihalli Chandrashekar and other office-bearers of Raita Sangha to the coastal region for a debate. We do not have enough water in Netravati basin in March itself, then how can we give water to the people of Kolar and Chikkaballapur?"

Lashing out at Kodihalli Chandrashekar for supporting only the interests of people of Kolar and Chikkaballapur and neglecting Dakshina Kannada, he said, "What wrong have farmers done to you for taking a stand against them?"

Lambasting state and union governments, he said, "The implementation of the project is an attempt to bring famine in this region. In the process you are indirectly killing people here. Hence the people of this region are demanding a separate Tulunadu state, and if a separate state is formed, the curse of dividing Karnataka will fall on both BJP and Congress.

"I ask MLAs and MPs of this region, why are you not raising your voice against this project in the assembly and the parliament? Only power is important to you and not the interests of the people," he charged.

"I urge the people and farmers of the coastal region to come to the streets and oppose the project, as none of the MLAs and MPs are going to speak against it," he added.

"I too support permanent drinking water solution for the people of Chikkaballapur and Kolar, but not at the cost of Netravati river. If this project is implemented, there will be no fresh water flowing into the sea and fish will go extinct. This will result in suicides of fishermen, and of almost all the people of the coastal region too. It is not too late, the state government can still drop the project.

"The people of this region are getting a feeling that none of the political parties or leaders are supporting them. Everyone feels that the people of this region are not able to raise their voice. I even question BJP leaders Yeddyurappa, Eshwarappa and Jagadish Shettar and even Congress leader Veerappa Moily - the people of this region will not forgive you. Not even once you have spoken for the people of this region. Hence, the demand for a separate state is natural," he said.

"As many as 138 taluks are affected by drought. I suggest chief minister Siddaramaiah to visit those taluks with ministers and officers and take adequate measures to solve the problem. I have always said that some of the ministers in the government are not working, but I have spoken only against the government and not the party. The strength of the party lies in its party workers," Poojary added.

Criticizing MLA Ramesh Kumar for allegedly passing derogatory comments against him in the assembly, Poojary said, "In the assembly, Ramesh Kumar has used unparliamentary and derogatory words against me. The speaker was quiet, even though the accusations were made without any proof. Ramesh Kumar was speaker of the assembly once, and he should know that when you are accusing someone in the assembly in that person's absence, those comments should not be taken into record. Does he not know this rule? I ask speaker Kagodu Thimmappa what exactly he was doing when Ramesh Kumar was making these comments? Ramesh Kumar, you can suppress my voice, but not the voice of the coastal region.

"There are reports stating that Ramesh Kumar has acquired 100 acre land belonging to SC/ST community and the forest department. The comments that you (Ramesh Kumar) made against me are due to your frustration on not being made minister," he alleged.

Asked if he would lead the agitation to demand a separate Tulunadu state, he said, "Poojary is already dead, and the only thing remaining is for some people to build my tomb. Only time will decide whether Poojary will lead the agitation or not."

Former mayor Hilda Alva, former deputy mayor Kavita, corporator Naveen D'Souza and others were present.

For the cause of Tulu Nadu, we are with you. Enough is Enough. Step motherly attitude to coastal Karnataka both by State as well as Central.

We wish all the best for Tulunadu.

Mr. Poojary, first step should hunger strike for the cancellation of Yettinadu project. If not, then fight for the creation of Tulu nadu.

This divide and rule will put everybody in the soup. United we stand should be the rule of the day. If this is achieved, there will be many ministers with a new governments filling their own pockets and ruining the life of the hard working people. It is easy to have a different state but the consequences are very bad.

Mr. J. F. Gonsalves, Bannur, Puttur/Mangalore: Chi, Chi, Tu, Tu.
It is better that you shut your mouth rather than asking Mr. Poojary to shut up. Ever since the reorganization of State in 1956 and formation of earlier Mysore State and later renamed as Karnataka State in the 70's, what these governments of the State have done for the Coastal Belt and Kodagu. Only Bangalore is developed. We are not second class citizens of Mother India, remember this.
I stand for Seperate State called Coastal Karnataka State rather than be at the mercy of our Rulers of Bangalore and Ghats region. Kodagu is demanding separate state and they too have been given step motherly treatment in the state economy like DK and Udupi, Jai Seperate Coastal Karnataka State, Jai Tulu Nadu, JAI HIND, JAI HIND, JAI HIND.

    INTELLIGENT.

Mr. Gonsalves, I agree with your comments to certain extent.
Remember, I am not against providing drinking water to people of Kolar or other needy places. Kolar is the most fertile land, many things are produced there. The water beds in Kolar, Bangalore and other places including our Yemmekere lake at Bolar, Mangalore are filled up and destroyed for real estate business.
But when there is agriculture and other production, it is for the survial and economic development of the region, the agriculture produce and other things have to move out, otherwise prices of products and vegetables crash, resulting in loss for those people and the vegetables are thrown on the roads.
This Yettinahole project is money swindling project by the vested interests and politicians, when it is known that only 9 TMC water is available instead of 24 TMC as projected. Besides our neighbouring state Tamil Nadu will lay claim on this water and inter state water dispute will start. It is only to avoid Cauvery dispute from TN, water in the Cauvery Basin flow without any hindrance to TN and local people will be satisfied with little water from Yettinahole. Do you agree with me?
Regarding the Table Top airport at Mangalore, so many politicians from Karnataka in past and present were/are in Central Govt., nothing has been done. There was proposal to build an airport at Padubidri before, but vested interests have come in between like National Highway project at Padubidri, which is still a dispute there. Politicians and vested interests are playing havoc with economic development.
This Yettinahole project is an environmental failure as it is located in one of the most sensitive Environment zone of the world. Already the wild animals have made their inroads in human habitations and Shiradi ghat.Nature will balance greediness of the people. It will be too late then. Jai Hind.

Dear Edward R. Monteiro, Kulshekar, Mangalore,
I quote yours:This Yettinahole project is money swindling project by the vested interests and politicians,Unquote.

This statement of the people is politically motivated to twist Yettinahole project to stop. This is peoples say.

To see it generally in every projects of India, there is money swindling.
Tell me from which project money is not swindled.

When the Mysore KRS was built people complained so much to Sir, M. Vishweshraya, ee mudukannige saayuva kaala. Now the same people’s generations are hailing him and few of them even do worship keeping his photo.

A situation has arisen here also Yettinahole project what I think it is not a bad project. Let our own brothers and sisters drink water. Don’t worry. Too much selfishness I see here from the Mangaloreans.

We the people in Mangalore say tho Ghatagar He doesn't know anything. Think suppose they are not cultivating in the agriculture field do we eat rice???!!!

Who is working in the harvest field. The Poor. The Rich are constructing buildings and making money. THE POOR ARE WORKING IN THE HARVEST FIELD. RICH ARE NOT WORKING IN THE HARVEST FIELD. WE HAVE TO PROVIDE THEM WATER FOR DRINKING.

I fully agree with Mr. Poojary that we have so many elected representatives from this region but not one is opening his rotten mouth. Of what use are these fellows to us? They have been elected by the people of this region and when they do not stand by us now, it does not make a difference whether they or there or not. They are dead wood to us. It is very clear that they are only interested in retaining their seats and certainly not for the people who have elected them. If all of them join together and bring pressure on the C.M., I have no doubt there he will have to listen to them. Shame on such people who have deserted us at this juncture. There is water scarcity already, things are only going to go from bad to worse if this project comes up. At the same time, it is really surprising to note that not many people seem to be interested in what is going on. If we don't help ourselves, who is going to help us? My dear friends, please do not be under the delusion that this problem will just vanish by our keeping quiet. See the writing on the wall and act now. It is now or never. What can one Janardhan Poojary do? He needs support and if the remarks made here are anything to go by, not many people are willing to do that. By the way, any idea where Mr. Nalin Kateel is these days? Not heard any comments from him.

I support the cause for a separate state of Tulunadu, Mr. Poojary should lead the agitation from the front, he can be potential CM of TuluNadu, we do not have to live under the mercy of Congress or BJP. DK, Udupi, Kasargod, and some tulu speaking taluks of chikmagalur have to be included to form TuluNadu with Mangalore as the state capital.

    John,
We know that separate state is not a solution to the problem but it will be a solution for all further problems, we can have a govt which is sensitive to issues of TuluNadu, and in future we can make our own decisions so there is no way decisions like Yettinahole can be made at the behest of people from Kolar or Chikkballapur ignoring us.
