Corinthians surge to top of Copa Libertadores group stage


Rio de Janeiro, March 17 (IANS): Corinthians football club moved closer to securing a place in the Copa Libertadores knockout phase with a 2-0 victory over Cerro Porteno.

Midfielder Lucca on Wednesday opened the scoring for the Brazilian outfit with a 23rd-minute strike before Victor Mareco turned the ball into his own net just past the hour, reports Xinhua.

The result at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo lifted Corinthians to the top of Group 8 with nine points from four matches.

Colombia's Independiente Santa Fe are second with seven points, ahead of Paraguay's Cerro Porteno on goal difference.

In other games on Wednesday, Atletico Mineiro defeated Colo Colo 3-0, The Strongest drew 1-1 at home with River Plate and Sao Paulo drew 1-1 at Trujillanos.
