Mangalore, Sep 28: 'India has a wealth of resources which can be developed leading to self-realization,' said A G Gopalkrishna Pai, chief operating officer, Mangalore Special Economic Zone, while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the state-level HR Confluence - 07 organized by School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya here on Friday September 28.

It was the first-ever state-level HR confluence organized by the college. The two-day seminar was on the theme 'Retention of Intellectual Capital where Human Capital Migrates.'

Inaugurating the seminar, Pai said that human nature is intricate and every human being is potentially divine. The world is evolving fast and reverse brain drain is taking place wherein people are coming back to India for jobs. He welcomed the idea of developing SEZs as they will lead to increase in reverse brain drain.

He further said that it is very hard for Indians abroad to adjust to western cultures and that is why they are always rooted to their Indian culture.

He advised the students to earn by proper means thereby generating wealth and not waste. 'Internal cleanliness is essential to become divine beings and a dozen divine beings are enough to get ahead of the US.' he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Y R Wilson, vice-president, Corporate Human Resources, Himatsingka Seide Ltd, Bangalore, lauded the college for producing great individuals especially in the field of HR. He further said that HR professionals are in great demand and urged the students to become people who'll be noted in the industry.

Chief guest Vasudev Kamath, unit head-delivery manager, Infosys, said that in the past people migrated to other countries for better lifestyle, salararies and opportunities. But today the lifestyle in India is fast changing, opportunities are plenty with MNC's coming in to the country and salaries too are better. Therefore, people are migrating back to India from the Silicon Valley.

Speaking on the roles of an HR professional, Kamath highlighted four major responsibilities - meeting the employees, conducting events in order to relieve stress, taking care of employee transactions and communication. A high level of employee engagement means that one need not worry about employee retention, he added.

Principal of the college Jacintha D'Souza summed up the speeches of the guests and said that Indians should be proud of our culture and the harmony we live in depite our differences. We are spiritual and even westerners come to India to seek spirituality, she said. She further said that recognition and happiness are important factors in ensuring employee retention.

The seminar will include paper presentations on various topics by HR professionals from well-known companies. There will also be competitions for participating colleges and cultural programmes by the students. The valedictory will be held on Saturday September 29.

Among those present were faculty members Ronald Sequiera, Ashok D'Souza, Evelyn Denis and others.
