Golfer Vani clinches season's third title


Gurgaon, March 18 (IANS): Vani Kapoor played a flawless round of two-under 70 on the final day to emerge victorious by a stroke in the seventh leg of the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour at the Classic Golf & Country Club here on Friday.

Vani, who scored 74 and 66 in the first two rounds, took her three-day total to six-under 211 -- one shot ahead of second placed Kiran Matharu, who also got a 70.

This is Vani’s third title in four appearances this season. She started from where she left off on Thursday and played yet another bogey-free round.

She began cautiously and played an even par front nine. She carded two birdies on the 13th and 18th holes in the latter half to finish with a total score of 210 after 54 holes. 

England's Kiran Matharu too recorded the same score of 70 in the final round to register her third runner-up finish of the season. She carded four birdies on the 9th, 10th, 13th and 18th holes while dropping shots on the 15th and 17th to finish with a total score of 211.

Kolkata’s Neha Tripathi (74), Bengaluru’s Sharmila Nicollet (72) and Kapurthala's Amandeep Drall (72) finished tied third with identical totals of 214.

Kapurthala’s Gursimar Badwal carded 74 to take the sixth position with a total score of 215. Kolkata’s Smriti Mehra finished seventh with a total score of 220, followed by Delhi’s Mehar Atwal and Mehak Sharma in eighth and ninth position respectively.
