Bhatkal: Mistaken identity - Suspected 'IS recruit' held at Pune airport released

Updated: April 7

Bhatkal, Apr 7 (Agencies): 34-year-old Ismail Rawoof Ahmed, who was detained on Tuesday in Pune by NIA investigators, suspecting him of being an ‘Islamic State recruiter’, has been released. Ismail’s detention could have been a case of ‘mistaken identity’, a said senior government official said in New Delhi.

Ismail’s father, Abdul Rawoof, said that he received a call from his son around 11 pm on Wednesday that he had been released and was in Mumbai, reports The Hindu.

Ismail was detained at the Pune airport on Tuesday, as he was leaving the country and flying to Dubai for onward journey to Syria.

Officials had identified him as Rawoof Ahmed, a resident of Bhatkal in north Karnataka. “The person detained at the Pune airport also had Rawoof in his name and since he is from Bhatkal, the intelligence agencies could have mistaken him for a terror suspect," The Hindu reports the official as saying.

Security agencies have been keeping a strict vigil after his name cropped up during internet chats with members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which is being monitored by sleuths to look for possible followers of the terror group, active in parts of Syria and Iraq.

They said Ahmed was detained as the Union Home Ministry had issued a Look Out Circular against him sometime back.

At least 14 youths have been arrested early this year by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as part of its probe on indoctrination of youths by the banned terror group.

Bhatkal: 'My son is innocent, knows nothing about ISIS': Ismail Rawoof's father

Bhatkal, Apr 6: Abdul Rawoof, the father of 34-year-old Ismail Musab Rawoof who was arrested by the National Investigative Agency (NIA) at Pune airport for alleged links with ISIS, has denied that his son had anything to do with the dreaded terror organization and asserted that his son was innocent.

Speaking to reporters here a day after the arrest, Rawoof said, "We do not have any information about his arrest. We came to know of it only through the media and people. At around 1.10 am he called us saying he had been stopped at the airport as they found something in his luggage and he was going to Mumbai. We have been told that meat was found in his luggage and it had been sent for testing to Mumbai.

"My son is innocent and knows nothing about ISIS. He has studied only till 8th standard and has no knowledge of computers or the internet. He uses a basic phone. All these allegations are false. They are trying to frame him. My son will never involve in anything illegal. I urge the government to get him released at the earliest," he said.

"He had been to Dubai before his marriage and now after 10 months he was going again for job. I myself dropped him to Pune by bus," he said.

Asked why he had booked the ticket to Dubai from Pune, he said, "Ticket from Goa and Mangaluru were expensive, whereas it was cheaper from Pune. So he booked the flight from there."

Ismail, suspected to be an IS recruit, was arrested by the NIA at the Pune airport while he was about to fly to Syria via Dubai to join the Islamic State terror outfit, officials said. He was detained after the union home ministry issued a 'look out circular' against him some time back, they said.

Totally shameful unprofessional act on the part of Intelligence Agency! Who is responsible for the mental torture undergone by his family for 2 days? If they go by the name Rawoof and arrest anyone by this name, the real culprit already got the message and will start chatting with another new name! Crying wolf, making media propaganda, giving mental torture then coming up with some lame excuse really shameful!

1.This is what happens when you come from a place, community ..which has one big 'SUSPECT'.Innocents are sure to be targeted. We read daily
of people being asked to get off planes and all that.
    2. Look at the havoc, the name 'Bhatkal' has created because of one person. He has brought disrepute to that place.
    3. Same thing happened recently in M'luru. A whole community is being targeted now because of the misdoing of a 'single man! Imagine!
    4. However, that does not absolve the NIA of it's wrong doing.it should have been more careful, diligent in conducting it's duty.
    5. 'One Rotten Apple' spoils the whole basket..How very true!.
6.Comment once left ..cannot be taken back also... However one can express regret, and feel for the family, especially the aged father

Where are those now, who were targeting this innocent person and his parents when they claimed their innocence???

How come the media and these sick people come to conclusion until the court order is passed?

Who will pay for the trauma & humiliation this innocent guy and his family has undergone all these days???

These kind of excuses of mistaken identity is only seen in our country. Had it been Middles East, US or Europe, the scene of these officials would have been different.

Leniency towards officials for not getting punished is the sole reason of these MISTAKEN IDENTITY cases are getting repeated in India.

“The person detained at the Pune airport also had Rawoof in his name and since he is from Bhatkal, the intelligence agencies could have mistaken him for a terror suspect," Okay, so according to your logic, anyone who have Rawoof in his name is IS agent and anyone who have RamDEV is GOD!! Do you guys arrest someone just because of name? Then why are you waiting to arrest Lalit MOD? You can arrest him sometimes when he comes to India to give Bhaashan, who is also from Gujarat. Your intelligence should not be based on name alone because it is easy for anyone to change their names. You do not have photos, finger prints? and if you're following his on-line chat, don't you know where that suspect might be now. Now that Rawoof you wanted might change his name to Ramdev and you will never catch him.

CONFIRMED!!! Arrested youth has been released and is in Mumbai now. Strange and surprised! why police harassing innocent Muslims Youths without having any strong evidence. By this point it is confirmed that that many innocent Muslims youths earlier and since a long time were arrested must be innocent.

Terrorist or a criminal should be punished as much as highest retribution. I believe in law and I respect the judgement on the basis of true facts and figures. Government should not be harass Muslims youths on the basis of suspicion. If this guy is really involved in the terrorist activities than why police kept quiet till date. If the police knew his activities like chatting etc than why they didn't traced his account details? This arrest must have some fallacious evidence.

Logic is very simple. Why during this time of Syrian Civil war, Ismail want to fly to Syria via Dubai.

NIA is not stupid to arrest Ismail, just like that. In this case, I am sure, 100% NIA is right.

The governments around the world could jail a person or several persons, but they cannot jail their IDEOLOGIES for ever !!!!!! Let me explain.

The Brits jailed Gandhi and Mandela for several years, but their ideology of non violence, and non co-operation lived on and inspired Martin Luther King in the US, and today as we speak Aung San Suu Kyi the new Burmese leader.

Another example as Indians we all know Gandhi and Jinnah, both came from the Lohana clan from exactly the same place and they had so much in common, but one is a hero, and the other is a zero. So let’s say Gandhi’s mother and Jinnah’s mother gave birth at the same hospital at the very same time and the nurse/doctor switched the babies at the birth, what would have happened, Gandhi would have been named Jinnah and Jinnah would have named Gandhi, correct? When a child is born it is an absolute clean slate and then all the teachings, the training, the influences of all those around them and even life changing events takes place and so the original Gandhi (named Jinnah) would have seen it perfectly OK to divided the country by religion, and the original Jinnah (named Gandhi) would have fought and died for India. GOT IT NOW.

Dear Don, That's my point. You can't jail the ideology and how can you jail all these people. The best thing is allow them to go and fight (and die) wherever they want to. make sure they do not return to India.

if this is true, he should be jailed for life. There is no point f leaving these people to roam around freely recruiting more. On the other hand, we will not loose anything if he want to go to Syria and die there as long as India cancels his passport, the moment his flight departed from Indian soil,(which means he cant come back to India) at least that will reduce this kind of people from Indian soil. I agree with Sachidananda that the same officials let the fugitives run away from India and stop the criminals to get out of India. Why can't the government a window for whoever wants to go to Syria, Turkey, Iran, Iraq and even to Pakistan with one way journey. it would be better for all the Indians who loves India in every way.

Please guide this kind of people. don't waste the time in unnecessary arguments. all people are talking theoretically but practically the situation is different. instead of supporting the terrorist guide them to live a good life.

his family responded saying that they received a call from him at 12 am (same night) where Ismail informed them that the airport officials found meat when searching through his luggage and had said that after the thorough examination of meat will issue a report on the same. He also told his father Raoof Ahmed that he is on the way to Mumbai from Pune and will leave for Dubai on Wednesday after getting the meat report. When SahilOnline informed them about his arrest then the family was stunned to know about the arrest. He was not ready to believe that his son has been detained who already talked with him from his own mobile number and informed him that he was travelling to Mumbai.
