Bantwal: Public stop gas tankers on highway, police intervene

Daijiworld Media Network – Bantwal (RJP)

Bantwal, Apr 20: People stopped more than 25 gas tankers, which were seen moving after 6 pm, on Tuesday, April 19 at Soorikumeru near Kalladka on national highway 75.
The action was in protest against the tension a gas tanker created in the early hours of Tuesday.

A loaded gas tanker headed to Bengaluru from MRPL Mangaluru, had tumbled by its side at around 1 am on Tuesday. The gas from the tanker started leaking resulting in evacuation of more than 50 houses in the vicinity. The traffic on the highway was completely affected for many hours. It was discovered later that the tanker was moving with high speed.

After the accident

Police team led by Bantwal town police sub inspector Nanda Kumar rushed to the spot and tried to convince the people to stop the protests. But the protestors said that as there is a rule which stops the tankers from plying on the highway after 6 pm, they should not violate the rule. They said unfortunately more tankers are seen travelling on the road at night compared to daytime.

They accused the authorities of tolerating the violation of law which has resulted in inconvenience to people.

Once the Sub inspector promised them that the tankers will not be allowed from Wednesday after 6 pm, the tankers which were stopped, were allowed to go. The protesting people warned that if tankers are allowed to move for any reason beyond the stipulated time, they will not let them pass by the area.

In our twin Districts, the existing town and city connecting roads have been converted to highways. There are no alternate roads. Nobody has complained and nobody is bothered. The so called Port connectivity road which connects mangalore port to Bangalore (now a part of the highway) cuts right through mangalore and passes through busy BC road, Puttur and goes to Bangalore. This comprises of city roads that have been upgraded to highways by 4 laning them. You cannot put restrictions on vehicles moving on highways and at at the same time the city corporations have absolutely no say on the maintainence and upkeep of these roads.
Why cant the public put pressure on the authorities to construct a complete bypass road for the highway where it is far from densley populated areas and vehicles can move without restrictions.MP's, MLA's,MLC's , DC, corporators please do something before there is a major disaster.

    Good signs from the public.
Authorities instead of pacifying public must take the tanker owners to task.

ha ha ha....law is there... nobody to follow. And public should come to road, stop the tankers and then police or authorities realize there is such a law and promise they will take care henceforth. What a judicial system... ayyyyooooo....

Any ways, good show by the local people. Well done.

It’s not so easy to create Gas Pipeline between Bengaluru & Mangaluru. If Yes, Pipelines has to come across many towns, Ghats. .. Risk factor is too high. . . Higher Safety measures are required to secure pipelines. Advanced Technology & Proper Patrolling, Satellite Surveillance etc. is utmost necessary. . . Another thing, After Certain years Pipeline gets Corroded or it gets old. . . Rust gets formed etc . . . Leak forms, Last Year Andhra Incident, Recently Jubail Incident. No need to elaborate more about Gas Leak.

Ratnagiri~ Bengaluru Pipeline, Inaugurated by then PM Manmohan Singh in 2013, It Covers almost most of the Districts of Karnataka… Bengaluru is 1 of the City in India through which most of the pipelines pass to and from other cities. . . .

Welcome move by the public. Hats off to you. This is the only way to awaken the lethargic system which is in deep slumber. Also each tanker should be checked whether they have 2 drivers and 1 cleaner. It's very imperative that an extra driver is present in the event of ill-health of regular driver considering the extremely hazardous nature of LPG.

Could this be the beginning of common people rightfully asserting their lawful rights without resorting to any violence or breaking any law?
