At 90, Spanish priest becomes Indian citizen after 38-year struggle

Mumbai, Apr 22 (PTI): After living in India for over six decades, a 90-year-old Spanish Jesuit priest finally had his long-cherished wish of becoming an Indian citizen fulfilled, after a 38-year-long struggle.

Father Gussi Frederick Sopena was handed the Certificate of Naturalisation, the final document proclaiming him to be an Indian citizen by Mumbai suburban district collector Shekhar Channe at the collectorate office in suburban Mumbai yesterday.

"There is no other country like India where I have lived and worked for 67 years. And now I am very happy that my grave will be in India, that of an Indian. Bharat Mata ki jai!" a beaming Fr Sopena said.

As member of the Society of Jesus, Fr Sopena had come to India to work amongst the poor.

"This is indeed a unique case as far as my district is concerned, of an individual who has waited for so long to get citizenship," Channe said.

Sopena had earlier completed all the formalities including a solemn oath for getting Indian citizenship at Collector's office at Bandra last October.

Sopena came to India in 1947 as a 22-year-old on a mission to serve mankind through the Society of Jesus, a male religious congregation of the Catholic Church founded by Spanish spearhead of counter-reformation, Ignatius Loyola in 1541.

He has spent 68 years in India by working for the betterment of the poor and needy in Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Raigad districts.

His work involved not only to spread the message of love of God but he also made the people aware of various initiatives of the governments meant for them.

Though he lost his left leg when he met with an accident in 1990 and has become hard of hearing due to constantly riding scooter, he still carries on with his avowed pursuit of serving the society.

As part of his ceaseless efforts to get Indian citizenship, in 1986 Sopena appeared for Hindi elementary examination and later he studied philosophy at St Xavier's Institute, Mumbai, and completed his graduation.

Heartfelt congratulations to you, Fr. Sopena SJ for getting Indian citizenship after yearning for it for over 30 years. It is a matter of pride and joy. Fr. Sopena is probably the only other foreign religious who worked for the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden after Mother (now Saint) Theresa of Kolkata whose praises have been sung throughout Christendom. Congratulations again to you. I hope the Indian Government would revoke the long standing injustice to those who obtained foreign citizenship out of necessity by restoring their Indian citizenship.

India is the most difficult country on earth for Foreigners to obtain travel documents, visa, extended stay permit, work permit, registration with local police departments, spousal residence permit and Citizenship etc,. People get fed-up saying Koti Koti Namaskar each & every time, bribing at each pillar & post and waiting countless time. So hardly anyone will ever want to return to India or seeks Citizenship.

Im not at all surprised that Fr. Gussi Fredrick had to struggle for a long period of 38 years to become an Indian Citizen. I, however, appreciate his patience and love towards our country - that's great! The simple examples for the delay are our court cases in India, prolonging years after years - tharik ka baad thark, tharik ka baad tharik.......

Agreed! Minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh seeking our country’s citizenship should be given top priority at least on humanitarian grounds. According to human rights activists, the level of religious persecution is worst in Pakistan. This is one of the unfortunate consequences of partition about 70 years ago, during which thousands could not cross the newly created borders due to unavoidable circumstances.

The popularity is so much that is the reason The chaaiwaala P.M., of India has issued a visa to a terrorist to increase terrorism in India and to Increase the Missionary works of priests by converting Hindus to Christianity.

Two years before India was a land of 80 percent Hindus. After completion of Cow Governments 5 years the hindus population will be 2.5 percent and Christian population will be 80 percent.

Purely because of conversions and the credit goes to Chaaiwaala P.M. of India.

Do you know, how many rich people from China and India are leaving the country to settle in the western world, especially in the U.S.?

This Priest came to India in 1947, worked with the poorest people and those people who are associated with the Catholic religious group called
"Society of Jesus or Jesuits, loves the suffering humanity not the materials things of the world. He loved the suffering people and served them and loved to die in the same country where he severed the poorest the longest and best part of his life.

Based on your comment, this Priest came straight away to India when Mr. Modi became the PM of India to settle in India due to his Modi deity worship.
