Siddaramaiah seeks national policy on prohibition of liquor

Kalaburagi, Apr 24 (DHNS): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has called for a well-considered national policy on prohibition. For prohibition to succeed in any state, the neighbouring states, too, should have similar law in place. Therefore, there is a need for formulating a national policy on prohibition, he told media persons on Saturday.

He was replying to a question on whether Karnataka would go for prohibition as Bihar had already opted for it and Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand were also thinking along those lines.

He pointed out that prohibition had been in force from 1950 in Gujarat and it was not a great success. “For prohibition to be successful, every state should have the law in place. If we declare prohibition and our neighbouring states do not have the same law, there will be a huge flow of illegal and unauthorised liquor into the state, which will be very difficult to prevent,” Siddaramaiah said.

He said that in the late 1990s, as the head of a Cabinet committee on prohibition, he had toured Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and other states, and finally found prohibition was not feasible in Karnataka. Some of the states which had gone for prohibition had reverted, as it was impractical, he said.

“We generate a huge revenue of Rs 16,000 crore from excise sales, whereas Bihar earned only Rs 4,000 crore. It hardly matters for Bihar, but for Karnataka, it is a great loss. We cannot afford losing it,” Siddaramaiah said.

Asked whether he would initiate any action against Textile Minister Baburao Chinchansur, against whom a Lokayukta Court has ordered registration of an FIR over his disproportionate assets, the chief minister said he was not aware of the matter and that he would look into the order before taking any decision.

If this happens in the country it will be the end of Tourism.

I am a travel agent. I do not consume alcohol / pork. But i am not against anyone consuming it. Infact my foreign guests ( tourists ) consume it and it does not bother me. Our politicians are very petty minded.

Please CM don't waste your's & everyone's time on discussing this issue. Discuss what is important today - water conservation, supply of power etc. The government has no plan for these important topics. Even today, we have to depend on rain every year.Is there any alternative being planned. No, because you people are very busy in unwanted activities.

Mr. CM, there are more urgent and emergency situations in the state than discussing liquor ban. States are suffering due to drought. Water has become scarce and people are struggling with everyday needs. Can you kindly address the genuine issues. More forestation drive, ban on cutting of trees in the name of road development by the govt. and by the builders to build new building. A legislative need to be passed on cutting of trees and need to develop infrastructure and construct and develop new and old dams in the state. What action have you taken in this regard. Stop discussing non-urgent issues and fool the people. Jai Hind.

Those States Governments which are hiding under the lame excuses that prohibition is the violation of the fundamental right, then another excuse that if prohibition is enacted, then dangerous underground liquor consumption will explode, both are pure lame excuses.

In any of the States where liquor is legally sold, it is not tax free but the State Governments are reaping a big income harvest through the killing taxation.

Simply watch from the State of Kerala, how the reduction in accidents-fights and other trembling social disorders have been reduced through the introduction of prohibition.

My friend who was an alcoholic is now engaged in the rehabilitation of the alcoholics. When he settled in Kerala five years back, he told me that even the people coming to work in the agricultural jobs have been intoxicated everybody had some dose of liquor inside. Now that is being changed rapidly for good.

Prohibition in 1920s proved a failure even in USA, leading to origanized crime, smuggling, bootlegging, and many negative issues.

Corruption, Population control, responsible behavior of citizens is the only way forward for a progressive India.

Sidduji proved that he is a man of rational thinking and not a hypocrite to please others. Bringing prohibition may not help in bringing total use of alcohol. People will adapt to different ways to substitute alcohol. There is no dearth for local or country liquor and liquor smuggling from neighboring States. Also the revenue which it generates to fill government coffers.
Jossey, why you have to off to USA. Goa is not very far.

Prohibition of liquor is one of the worst decision a govt can ever do. I dont how many of you really know this but Sale of liquor brings stability to a country. well thats my hypothesis. Thats because angry people who are drunk would less likely to revolt against the govt. Just look around the world. Most politically unstable countries are where liquor is banned or not consumed/ or people cannot afford to purchase it. If a country with a liquor ban exists it is probably because it is under a authoritarian rule.

You may ask why is it so? well i look at it this way, Generally people always complain about their govt. Most of get really angry at our govt. But then what happens? We drink, blame govt or blame anyone.. then go to sleep.... then get up next morning.. go to work or do whatever we do to make a living. But in a situation where liquor is banned what would you do??? well you would get angry at the govt or anybody..and build upon that anger...and scheme to overthrow the govt.
