Mangaluru: NGT orders stay on cutting of trees for new DC office at Padil

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Apr 26: After initially giving the green signal for the construction of the DC's office complex at Padil here, the Chennai bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has now ordered a stay on the cutting of trees for the project.

In an order passed on Tuesday April 26, the NGT stated that no tree shall be cut and no existing structure shall be demolished in the 5.89 acres of land at Padil earmarked for the project until further orders.

The next hearing in the case has been posted to July 7 this year.

The order comes just days after chief minister Siddaramaiah launched the project in a ceremony in Town Hall during his visit to the city. The Rs 41-crore project entails cutting down of nearly 386 trees.

In February this year, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim had informed that NGT had given its clearance for the project after initially rejecting it, as the district administration had obtained necessary permission from the forest department to fell the trees. However, now in its fresh order, the NGT has stated, "The Tribunal is satisfied that there exists a substantial question to and concerned with environment and ecology to be decided by the Tribunal."

The Tribunal also made the ministry of environment, forests and climate change, government of India, as one of the respondents in this case.

Further, the NGT directed the central environment ministry to depute a team headed by the chief conservator of forests from its regional office in Bengaluru to inspect the entire area in Padil wherein the trees earmarked for the project are situated and file a report about the nature of the trees, type, species, girth etc and the total extent of the land, and whether the trees were planted or sprung up and grew naturally. The report is to be submitted before the NGT during the next hearing. The NGT ordered that till its final decision after the submission of the report, no trees shall be cut in the 5.89 acres.

Advocate Suma R Nayak of Kottara, the appellant in the case, told daijiworld, "NGT has given an order to maintain status quo and not to cut trees. The expert committee report will be reviewed by the NGT and then a decision will be taken."

Govt. should take action as per Karnataka Tree Preservation Act and as directed by the NGT. Whether Rev. Dept. is going to cut all the tress or in a portion of land where the building is to be constructed. Why all tis confusion.?

It is heartening to learn about this decision. Very good decision. Certainly no need to construct anything at the cost of cutting down trees. Let this office be constructed in a place where there are no trees.

    Dear Commenter here,
Please think yourself how many trees you have saved, how many plants you have planted, in Mangalore the private owners of property cut lot of trees and build the building and never plant a plants, there, were where these people? Have they gone to court? When govt projects comes they think about green and trees and forest. But when the private people do the development and when they cut the trees or even forest no one is bothered about these. Where in Padil there are very few trees around compound. I think these people don’t want move the DC office from State Bank to Padil. If DC office comes to Padil all the government office are coming under one roof, as of now these offices are scattered all around the Mangalore. My Dear Friend first you plant 25 plants in your compound then you go to court. Don’t delay this project just putting cases in the court. God bless you.

Half of Mangalore greenery has been destroyed since the craze for residential complexes and demand for flats increased.
The first flats which came up were Lobo Prabhu apartments at light house hill and that was the first ever residential flats to be noticed in Mangalore (in 1970’s). Just watch what Mangalore is now? Looks posh with modern buildings but only few coconut trees are remaining. At least authorities should try to put some hold on new residential complexes by destroying the trees and the greenery.

We all know in Govt Office how it will work. if govt build high tech office also our Govt Employee will not become High tech that is sure. what is my suggestion is instead of cutting tree they can you use Mary hill Helipad Ground because helipad can built any small place. existing Helipad is not using much. in maryhill, bondel or some other place govt had a so many plain lands. i urge daijiworld should support public and try to publish the news about where all the plain land available for new DC Office. in this at least we save the trees.

Fantastic order to preserve trees n ecosystem. Most human habitat is constructed by destroying precious trees n delicate ecosystem. flora fauna bees butterflies etc all had to face the consequences. Man somehow can survive in case of lack of resources like water food shelter, but other species simply go exinct. Where do they go for food, shelter and water?

There are very few lung spaces existing without much human interference in cities. Now those also are targeted in the name of DC building and what not. Have some sense Mr.DC. Don't long for royal treatment. There are other important problems to be addressed first.

Forest department usually in sleep mode. They just don't bother about protecting wildlife n forests. Living in huge buildings and leading luxurious life wit tax payer money, top forest officials never do spot inspection. Dereliction of Mandatory constitutional discharge of duties on part of forest officials is a serious crime. Damages to environment will echo in eternity.

MESCOM linemen too are destroying trees in erratic way in the name of clearing line. Felling trees remains an easy solution for these people. They never plant a single sapling, only know to kill ecosystem. Linemen should be sent back home if they cut trees mercilessly.

What harm tree does to us? Kindly do not go for easy option of felling trees, try to find tougher solutions. Cutting one tree has lot of fine details linked to survival of all species. We have to fight against injustice n be a voice to voiceless in our existence. We really miss vinayaka baliga type warrier.

If DC’s office cannot be constructed without cutting trees, then better not to construct any new building. Instead renovate the existing building or construct new building in the existing location. Further the present location is ideal for any government or public office for people coming from all directions.

Very true. Its ironic that people chop off all the trees, pollute all the rivers, fill the lakes and build apartments on them and then complain of hot weather and lack of water. Bangalore is an example. Once upon a time even fans were not required in bangalore and today even A/C's are not sufficient.

There is no need for a new DC's office when there is enough structure and space at present DCs office. The government shud use that money to construct a better bus terminal in pumpwell which will automatically decongest state bank. First of all Padil Adyar is so congested tat th town planners are furthering creating more bottlenecks. Someone please take up th cause...

I do not understand why our leaders are in the verge to cut down the trees & name it as development. We already have a DC office rather than building a new office they can improve the condition of the existing one which will save time & money. Suma nayak is doing the wonderfull job & we support her for that. Stop destroying mother nature in the name of development. No developments can stand the wrath of mother nature.

Oh!how sad this order came from NGT. Few Elected Politicians along with Government Officials could have made some money out of this Project. Corporators missed chance of making black Money with the help of Contractors. Also missed the opportunity for MLA and MLC to be on Banner along with few Corrupt Corporators.
Since there is no Rain and heat, this Green Land will help the public with Oxygen. Also it will cool the Nature.
