Mangaluru, Apr 27: Despite the ban on plastic in the state, several shops continue to sells goods in plastic covers and even sale of plastic bags has continued.

In order to send a clear signal to violators, officials of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on Wednesday April 27 raided a few shops at Central Market in the city.

Though the officials did not fine any shop during the raid, they seized plastic bags placed inside bulk bags in the shops.

The MCC officials also had to face a flash protest from shop owners. In no time, they were surrounded by the public and situation threatened to go out of hand. The officials then called the police to the spot. The shopkeepers argued that as per the rule, they were allowed to use grocery bags, but these too were seized by the officials.

As the violators were not fined and no cases were registered, it is surmised that the raid was only to create awareness and seize plastic bags.

It is learnt that chief environmental officer of MCC Madhu led the raid and altogether, 8 officials were part of the operation.

Officials are learnt to have taken out plastic buntings and flex banners displayed in the city. The ban on plastic in the city was imposed from April 15.

Government doesn't want to ban liquor for 16000 crore government booty, but they want to ban plastic makers flex printers as they do not have alternate waste management program & govt. is speaking about the law of 1986 & plastic & flex started making its presence almost after decades of that law then why did the govt. gave licenses to manufacture them & now why ban who will pay them their investment what about the workers. is there any answer to that....

earlier sugar, Tea Powder and all was got on Paper bags, But since the Plastic came to the market, it over took all and even spoiled our beautiful environment.

Are plastic bags allowed to be used for carrying fish?
Most of the liquid items like milk, curds, buttermilk, Sambar etc. packed and delivered in plastic bags.
With the ban there could be lot's of inconvenient. Public should be taught the disposal methods also.

Good incentive for environment protection. 15 years back we were taking cloth bag to grocery shops, shop owner was giving goods in paper packs. In marriage functions sharbat & water served in steel glass now replaced by plastic cups. Even though we had narrow roads one can walk 3km very easily because of shade. Water was stored in earthen pots in the home always relaxed our mind. Really missing those days.

This is a big joke. Government cannot mange and dispose the waste. So it bans plastic.Banning is not the solution to this issue. If there is a good waste management program then plastic is not an issue at all.

Not all the things can be carried in cloth bags. What is the solution for those ?

I think you need to do its on daily basis and randomly raid the shops at anytime in a day.only then you can stop it.Or else it simply a waste doing such raids.

Stop production of polythene bags.Which would be a better option.

Its just like helmet rule! raids checking, inspections are conducted once in a bluemoon and not in a continuous manner. Be steady and do it properly. Also book cases those who smoke in public places.

Stop manufacture of plastic instead of collecting from the shops which purchase for their use and before that find an alternate trendy packing and carrying material.

Such a sturm on shop owners was needed. They should give a certain time to them for ending plastic bags ,better on own free will. All of a sudden check and take out ,doesn't make sense.People will continue buying even it costs 5rupees when they dont have other alternative.Fish you cant carry in other bags.Only People have to realize the Problems and the necessity of such ban.It will take sometime .Shop owners should in future avoid giving in plastic. Here People have started avoiding plastic bags but some People still buy bags when needed even it is costing more. Not everybody has a car.

Hats of MCC officials. Ground reality is that the shop keepers are using plastic bags, charging extra money for that bag and making additional money. Exemptions are given to find loop holes in the regulation.

It is very funny that MCC does things which are pick and choose.
    1. They raid the Restaurants for health regulations. Workers have to waqsh hands after nature calls. Kitchens have to be clean. Gloves should be worn during serving food.
But the same Health Officials do not see the road side Food Vendors serving the food without washing the hands. Preparing and selling food near Public Toilets. Washing Pans and Plates in dirty water. Road dust covering the food items.

At least MCC is doing the right thing in raiding the restaurants. Road side eateries - no health conscious person should eat from them. Eating at road side eateries is at ones own risk.
Therefore MCC is not checking these. Please stop eating at road side eateries !!!
In restaurants, hand wash soap should be available not only to customers but also to the workers. Clean, non smelling toilets should also be a priority inside every restaurant.

The ban on plastics was imposed from April 15th. then why were some official/political banners allowed all over the city a few days ago?
What do traders do with their existing plastic bags ? How many times must i say thru these colums first cloth bags must be subsidised and produced in a big scale

When whole of DK is facing water problems both city and panchayat areas MCC is busy in checking.checking...
