Mumbai, May 10: The Kannada department of Mumbai University on the eve of Basava Jayanthi held a lecture at Ranade Bhavan, Kalina Campus of Mumbai University, Santacruz east on Monday afternoon, May 9. Famous Kannada researcher, language scholar Dr Sangamesha Savadattimata spoke on the personality of Basavanna, his achievements and values.

Dr G N Upadhya, head of the Kannada department of Mumbai university presided over the programme. Savadatthi Mata gave a lecture on the life achievements of Basavanna.

G N Upadhya in his keynote address said that the birth of Basavanna on the eve of Akshaya Thritiya has added shine to the festival. “Dr Sangamesha was down to earth and one of the rare scholars. He was also
the researcher who had spread the superiority of Kannada to the world. His was a community struggle and he worked for the community. He has contributed to the language immensely with his glossary. May his
works be awarded with Pampa award,” he said.

Shakuntala S Savadattimata, Roopa Vastrada, Smitha Mahesh, Sanjaya Vastrada, Dakshayani Yadahalli, Kiran Rao and others were present. Sushila S Devadiga and Shamala Prakash sang poems. Duggappa Kotevar welcomed, introduced Dr Sangamesha and compered the programme. M G Shivaraj proposed the vote of thanks.
