'World Day against Child Labour' observed in DK, Udupi districts

Mangaluru, Jun 12: Dakshina Kannada district administration in collaboration with various other departments observed ‘World Day against Child Labour’ here on Sunday, June 12.

After inaugurating the occasion, district in-charge minister, B Ramanath Rai, said, “It is the responsibility of parents and guardians to provide proper education to their children. Child labour is an issue in the developing and poor countries. We should abolish such menace from society. People in the society and organizations should join hands to abolish child labour and educate people on this.Living on the wages of child labour is like consuming poison,”

“Children should be given good education. District administration has taken several initiatives to make Dakshina Kannada free from child labour. Dakshina Kannada has very less child labourers compared other parts of the state. State government has also announced prize for district in this regard,” he added.

He also said that by September 2016 district administration will abolish all types of child labour from the district.

Free bags were distributed to the children of Snehalaya rehabilitation centre on this occasion.

To mark the event, a rally was held from Hampankatta circle to Town Hall.

On the occasion, two orphan children from Snehalaya explained their plight as child labourers and how Snehalaya and Hilda Rayappan came to their help by providing good education.

MLC Ivan D'Souza, Dakshina Kannada ZP president, Meenakshi Shanthigodu, ZP member Tumbay Chandraprakash Shetty, Kripa Amar Alva the president of KSCRC, MallannaGowda Patil the senior civil court judge, deputy commissioner AB Ibrahim, ZP CEO PI Shrividhya, DCP Shantharaju, addditional SP Vedamurthy, Hilda Rayappan of Snehalaya, Renni D'Souza and others were present.

Udupi, Jun 12: ‘World Day against Child Labour’ was observed at Dr B R Ambedkar auditorium, Adi under the aegis of district administration authority, district legal services authority, labour department, district child labourers project association, Udupi, Bar association.

Speaking on the occasion, Shivashankar B Amarannavar, district and session court Judge said, “Parents play crucial role in eliminating child labour from society. If people see child labourers, beggars, school dropouts, deprived children in their locality, they should inform concerned department. A mutual cooperation and understanding between society and government is needed in eradicating child labour and bring them into main stream society.”

Throwing light on the current figures of rescue cases from anti child labour cell in Udupi district, he said, “The department raided three houses and filed cases and fined the owners in 2013-14.Approximately 12 children were rescued in the district. A total of Rs 40,000 compensation was collected from two offenders in 2014-15.”

“In the current financial year, nearly 1,134 cases were reported in district and investigated. Three child labourers were rescued and complaints were lodged on exploiters. We also recovered Rs 20,000 as fine from one of them. The department also protected two children at Malpe harbour and entrusted them to the Child welfare committee,” he added.

    Talk is cheap but action is expensive. All Fake Show. I am sure many of the speakers drive through Mangalore Streets. Even half blind person can see Children of Migrant workers working along with Parents in construction sites. They carry tools,wood pieces,sand in trays and more to it. Every street junction,Public can see Children begging in middle of the traffic signal.
    I can see in every restaurant I visit,little boys are cleaning the tables plus helping in kitchen. But these fake People eat in these restaurant and many of them ask these Child laborers to clean their tables. MLA and MLC need propaganda and this is best premise for it. Missing is banner Person.

    Poverty forces parents to send their children for work. Child Labour is one of the problems of India, this problem is due to poverty and lack of employment for their parents, not having other sources of income in their families.
