Kasargod Jun 19: In connection with the theft of gold ornaments from a woman bus passenger, Badiyadka police have arrested three nomad women hailing from Tamil Nadu. The arrested are Laxmi (34), Ayamma (28), and Murukamma (26), from Mettupalayam.

They were arrested in connection with theft of seven sovereigns of gold ornaments belonging to Venkateshwari from Uppinangady Beerantadka. The woman was going to the house of a relative at Neerchal on June 13, when her ornaments were stolen. The theft had occurred during the period she was going in a bus to Perla from Badiyadka.

Venkateshwari had filed a complaint in Badiyadka police station about the theft.

Locals had caught hold of three nomad women found to be moving about under suspicious circumstances and handed them to police. During interrogation, the police came to know that they were the ones who stole ornaments belonging to Venkateshwari. The people, noting that there has been an increase of thefts in buses since some days, had kept an eye on the movements of suspicious-looking people.

It is gathered that the three ladies used to wear burkhas when boarding the buses, and commit thefts, taking care to ensure that their victims do not come to know about them. Policemen said that some of the thefts which happened in the recent past were committed by these three women. They are continuing with investigation.

The police are examining the probability of this gang's involvement with theft of nine sovereigns of ornaments from Rekha, a hotel employee, and Rs 70,000 from the bag of a woman. The women are now in judicial custody and the police are preparing to seek their police custody for detailed investigation.
