Bangalore: BJP Divided House over Ministerial Berths - Yedyurappa Tensed

Bangalore/New Delhi, Nov 17: After firming up a government with "difficult ally" JD(S) in Karnataka, the BJP is now faced with an uneasy situation within the party on the issue of ministerial berths.

Chief Minister, B S Yeddyurappa, is facing demands from former Union Minister, Anant Kumar camp for a "better say in the portfolios as a reward to the camp's cooperation in his way to power."

As per the new understanding with JD(S), the saffron party is to have 15 portfolios and the Chief Ministership, while JD(S) will have 18 ministers which includes a Deputy Chief Minister.

"The earlier arrangement was that Anant Kumar camp was assured at least five ministerial berth, a demand which the Chief Minister's side is now not comfortable with," sources in the party said.

Fissures were apparent from the day of swearing-in ceremony when Anant Kumar had skipped a press conference by party president Rajnath Singh and instead chose to play host to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan in Bangalore.

Yedyurrappa here on Friday twice met party president Rajnath Singh and senior leader L K Advani separately and discussed the issue in detail, sources added.

The Yedyurrappa camp is contending that the status of Anant Kumar need to be restrained to the central party activities "as it was during the first twenty months of rule in alliance with the JD(S)."
