Mangalore Dec 4: They were the first couple to be elected to Indian Parliament.

And on December 5, in recognition of their contribution to Indian polity, a portrait of Joachim and Violet Alva would be unveiled in Parliament.

It was in 1952 that Violet was elected to the Rajya Sabha and Joachim to the Lok Sabha, both from the then Bombay state, making them the first couple to be elected to Parliament.

The unveiling of the portrait coincides with the centenary year of Joachim Alva. Next year would be the centenary of Violet.

It was during his stormy university career that he met Violet, a shy, demure Gujarati girl. While he was Konkani from Mangalore and was of the Catholic faith, she was a Protestant from Gujarat.

Given the orthodoxy of that era, these were hardly the ingredients of a socially acceptable and successful marriage. However, they defied tradition and triumphed, forming a successful partnership in personal as well as public life.

By the time Violet Hari became Violet Alva on November 20, 1937, she was a transformed person, venturing on to public platforms and developing into a confident speaker in several languages.

Violet and Joachim Alva set up legal practice together in Mumbai, later deciding that they could make a more meaningful contribution to society in journalism.

On August 9, 1943, the first anniversary of Quit India Day, the couple founded 'Forum', a weekly political news-magazine.

I was very happy after reading the news on December 3rd in Times of India about the portrait of first couple in parliament to be put up on 5th of Dec this year.Immediately I started thinking of my school and college days of district in north kanara.

Mr Jochim Alva had the honour of getting elected consecutively thrice in 1952,1957 and 1962 from the North Kanara District and also Smt Violet Alva also nominated to Rajya sabha. As my father L.F. Fernandis who was primary school teacher of North Kanara District and a congress man, I had a chance to see Alva couple often during election time.As my father good orator in Kannada,he used to help them during election time.Even I had a chance to hear their speeches during my college days of Kanara College Kumta. Those days it was the only one college throughout North Kanara district. Both the M.Ps.were very good oratators.

Now the political legacy of the family was carried out by their daughter in law Margaret Alva. She too got elected from North kanara District.

It is heartening to know that the portrait of the first couple to be elected to the Parliament of independent India, Mr. Joachim Alva and his wife Mrs. Violet Alva will be unveiled in the Parliament on 5th December 2007. Incidentally, Mr. Joachim Alva was a Roman Catholic from Udupi and a freedom fighter. He had the honour of becoming the member of Lok Sabha consecutively thrice in 1952, 1957 and 1962. Mrs. Violet Alva was the Vice-Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha from 1953 to 1954 and Deputy Chairperson from 1962 to 1969.

It is a befitting honour to this exemplary parliamentary couple who made their mixed marriage work wonderfully well. Though from Gujarat, Mrs. Violet Alva made efforts to speak in Konkani. As a young boy, I had the good fortune of hearing Mr. Joachim and Mrs. Violet Alva when they had visited Moodubelle in the early 1950’s. The political legacy of the Alva family is presently carried on by Mrs. Margaret Alva, the daughter-in-law of Mr. Joachim and Mrs. Violet Alva.
