Mangaluru, Aug 23: Dakshina Kannada Online Taxi Drivers and Owners Association protested against the harassment on the app-based taxi operators in and around city.

The protest rally was held from Nehru Maidan to Central Railway Station here Tuesday August 23.

Addressing the protestors, association honorary president and DYFI district vice-president B K Imthiaz said, “App-based taxi drivers are facing harassment by a few taxi and auto rickshaw drivers while carrying the passengers from railway station. App-based taxi drivers do not park their cars in the parking. But when they get call, online taxi drivers come to railway station to pick the passengers. Online taxi drivers legally own taxis and they are paying required taxes to the government,”

“A few taxi and auto drivers are harassing and intimidating online taxi service drivers in different ways. But as the administration is silent on this issue, harassment has continued. Police department and the administration should stop this kind of harassment to the online taxi drivers. Association has also filed police complaint on these issues,” he added.

Imthiaz also demanded that administration should provide opportunity for online taxi drivers to pick up the passengers from the railway station. “All taxis which come to the railway station to pick up passengers should be given proper protection. Proper action should be taken against those who indulge in harassing passengers and online taxi drivers. Separate online parking facilities in the railway station should be provided for online taxi drivers.” Imthiaz concluded.

Online taxi service driver Harish speaking to media said "After completion of my education, I obtained a loan from the bank to purchase a taxi. Now I am working as an online taxi driver. When the online taxi drivers bring their vehicles to railway station, we are threatened and harassed. Even the passengers are harassed in some instances.”

There should be separate convenient pick up point for App-based taxi operators and private cars at the airport and railway stations without interfering normal taxis and Autos. A proper board should be displayed outside airport and railway stations with tariffs of taxis and Autos for major citiy destinations . Tariffs could be slightly more(rs 25 and rs 50 more )than App based taxis for auto and private taxis as a waiting charges .(respectively.)

Ola & Uber are most affordable taxi service, hence the opposition from the suckers! Just last month, regular known taxi demanded Rs 1,200/- from M'lore airport to Udupi but Ola took me just for Rs 550/-!!!

app based taxi service is transparent and can travel in reasonable rate. The taxi and auto will loot the public without meter and they drive as the road is only meant for them.

These auto rickshawallas should be taught a lesson ,majority of them think they are owning a Mercedes and taking for a ride. They don't evn give back chillars.
Online taxi drivers are good and they have civic sense of dealing with passengers. In karnataka, only coastal areas are so insecure don't know why?

I have seen taxis like Ola, Meru, Tabcab etc are existing in many cities in India. Even in smaller cities like Hubli, Dharwad Ola taxis service exists.Ola gives best service for the money. I am very surprised why only in Mangalore they do not exist. It is nothing but opposition from the local taxi & rickshaw mafia. Authorities must take stern action. They should work for the good of the citizens and not the mafia.

Auto drivers and taxi wallahs are behaving like goondas in Mangalore. Roaming in the street with a knife to exhort money from people is a better civilized job for them. Rash driving, exorbitant charging and cartel formation to intimidate passengers are order of the day. In Mangalore Junction, their aggressiveness is worst than from a pack of stray dogs and they intimidate innocent passengers to cough-up Rs. 200 to cover even less than four kilometers. Greed to the core. Fares in DK are very high comparable to neighboring states. Still, these people requires hike in fares for every paisa rise in fuel. People should come together for a mass boycott of their services, to teach them a befitting lesson. As of now, on line taxi is transparent, cheap and hence dependable!. Go for public transport, else online services. Save money. Let them understand people power. Boycott taxis and Autos......... We will and We can..............!

Harassment of online taxi drivers at the airport also should be put an end to. That will stop the taxi mafia from fleecing the passengers.
