Renowned labour leader Sharad Rao passes away

Mumbai, Sep 1: Renowned Kannadiga labour leader in Maharashtra hailing from Talapady-Kannur in Dakshina Kannada, Sharad Rao (76) passed away due to illness here in Mumbai on Thursday September 1.

Sharad Rao was the campaign leader in Mumbai’s BEST, Taxi, Auto and several labour organizations. He was leading Hindustan Lever Limited union from 1957 to1967, later Trade union movement, Bombay Clerk’s union in 1970 and Save Octroi movement. 

He was the working committee member and City worker in BMC in 1978.  He was active in several organizations including Bombay port trust.

Rao who was staying in Goregaon west Bangooru city had contested in Vidhana Sabha elections in 2005 and 2009 as national Congress party candidate from Goregaon west constituency. Sharad Rao was popular as labour leader for the last five decades.

His wife Shanta Rao hails from Hiriadka in Udupi district. His last rites will be conducted only after the arrival of his son Shashank and daughter who are in Canada said the sources.

    RIP. Late Sharad Rao was the right hand man of Mr. George Fernandes. They together built Hind Majdoor Sabha. Both split from HMS and formed Hind Majdoor Panchayat. Both are of Socialist background and once capable of closing down Bombay in hours.
