New Delhi: This is what the Tata Rs 1-lakh Car Looks Like!

New Delhi, Jan 10: Ratan Tata, while unveiling the nano, said: "The car will meet all current safety norms and all emission criteria. The pollution it will cause will be lower than 2-wheelers."

The car, Tata said, is smaller than a Maruti 800, but has 21 per cent more volume or space inside than the 800. He said that the dealer price of the car will be Rs 1 lakh, plus value-added tax (VAT) plus transport charges.

The car will have a 624-cc petrol engine generating 33 bhp of power. It will sport a 30-litre fuel tank and 4-speed manual gearshift. The car will come with air conditioning, but will have no power steering. It will have front disk and rear drum brakes. The company claims mileage of 23 km per litre.

The car's dashboard features just a speedometer, fuel gauge, and oil light. The car does not have reclining seats or radio. The shock absorbers are basic.

Nano, the world's cheapest car, costs almost half of the cheapest car currently available anywhere in the world.

"Since we started the small car project four years ago, there has been a big rise in input costs, but a promise is a promise," Ratan Tata said while unveiling the car.

The Nano is expected to be commerically launched in the second half of 2008. News reports say that Tata Motors hopes to sell 500,000 units of the car, almost four times the number of Indicas it sells. Tata plans to focus on a market segment hitherto untapped.

Not since the launch of the Maruti 800 in 1983 has any car gripped the imagination of a nation and indeed car manufacturers the world over so intensely. If commercially successful, the Tata Nano can alter the passenger car market in India, and perhaps the world, beyond description.

In the present Mangalore roads where the already jampacked traffic situation is unmanageable, a car is not convenient to reach destination in time. Two-wheeler driver somehow squeezes himself in the midst of heavy traffic and can reach his destination a bit earlier than the carowner.

A fancy preference for Nano will not endure. Even in prime cities of European countries like Germany having multilane roads, preference is now for two wheelers.

Not too long ago in Brazil a certain car manufacturer (GURGEL) made a very similar promise. On this being Brazil there's no need to tell that when the car was finally ready it cost the same as any small car on the market. I wish Mr Gurgel could read and get some inspiration from Mr Tata who said: "Since we started the small car project four years ago, there has been a big rise in input costs, but a promise is a promise"

Which came first the chicken or the egg. we always had a parking problem thanks to our city administrators that does not mean our industry should halt producing cars instead we should halt producing kids who inturn drive cars therefore more kids more cars.

Dont blame Ratan Tata he has brought accolades to India as all of our Private Industry is doing now - After Liberalization= which some pessimists said we would sell our country to the west. Accept change and overcome challenges.

This car would surely solve the congestion problem lest aggravate it! A car with every middle class family would mean lesser need for bikes and rickshaws which are responsible for most of the traffic jams and rash accidents in big cities as everyone hopefully should drive their own car better than the bikers or rickshaw drivers. And as the saying goes, "4 wheels are always better than 2 (or 3)"!! :)

On a personal note all the credit goes to Mr.Tata for giving hopes to a common person to own a vehicle despite the critique one may have on this venture. Enviornmentalists can argue on the added pollution this may cause or traffic congestion it will have on our infrastructure.

I totally agree with Mr.Tatas concern on the family who very often commute on a rikshaw or a scooter all in one on open roads. This is an opportunity for all those dreaming a vehicle of their own to do the day to day chores and commuting. While this little vehicle cannot withstand an major accident, equally a scooter thats another argument one can make.

Over the years cost containment may be impossible on this little Nano- should I say Nano technology, is a thoughtbound venture of Mr. Tata. A solid Thumps up for MR. Tata and his super engineers, the envy of the world.

Nano car for Nano Roads? RATANji deserves all appreciation for this miracle. India has shown the way to the middle class of the world. Our roads may be congested if large number of cars roll out but we have to find a way out.

But consider the safety when compared to a family travelling on a two wheeler in rainy season on a slippery road which scene inspired Ratanji to dream an affordable car.

Some times it makes one feel that it is a dream or reality, a car for 1 lakh. The roads should also be Nana worthy other wise the car will end up as failure
