Karkala, Jan 27: The generosity of devotees during the annual feast of St Lawrence Minor Basilica, Attur brought smiles on the faces of the less-fortunate, who were waiting in queues, to receive alms from the drop-boxes which were kept at various points at the church during the five-day feast.

A large number of the poor and needy, gathered irrespective of caste, religion, color, creed at the premises of shrine since morning on Friday, January 27 to receive the aid.

The five-day feast witnessed thousands of devotees with open hearts drop money in the boxes.

The amount collected totaled up to Rs 10,32,000. As many as 2,700 people had assembled at the church premises on Friday.

Addressing mediapersons John D'Silva said, "The number of poor and needy have increased this year. This custom has been observed every year. As St Lawrence was more attached to the poor and needy, this is a small way to help the less-fortunate people. This year a Rs 300 bag will be given to each person. As many as 4 to 5 bags will be given to the person depending on his disability. At least one bag will be given to each woman as per their daily wage. The amount collected this year is less compared to the previous year."

Fr Vijay D’Souza, assistant parish priest said, "We are following the custom of giving alms to the less privileged even this year. Alms will be given as per a person’s ability. This is a small way to help the needy. We are trying to walk in the footsteps of St Lawrence."

Food packets were also distributed to the assembled people.

Richard Pinto, vice-president of pastoral council; Santhosh D’Silva, secretary of pastoral council; Leo Sequiera and other parishioners were present.

Really appreciate this good service done by Attur, St. Lawrence Church Management. I have seen since many years that there is no caste or religion bar and people seek spiritual blessings all alike. May God Bless all who contributed. St. Lawrence, shower your blessings on all.

1700 plus persons and 10 lacs to be distributed . I think 300 to 500 is very less but is enough as wages of three days . But I feel there should be segregation of the needy , some r differently abled , some are very old , and some actors who r lazy and don't want to work . There are also lots of people who pour on last day to collect money . Also distribution should be equal among men and women.

Appreciate the well intended act of charity by Attur Church.

This will attract more and more beggars to Attur and later this could turn out to be a uncontrollable menace.
This year itself, you could see more beggars around than last year. People who have visited the church during festival this year would not disagree with me.
Church can stop this kind of charity. There are many other ways of extending help to human kind, for which the church need no lessons from anyone.

I have seen more than 35 years, there is no caste or religion bar there.
Everyone will attend the feast and enjoy the joyful atmosphere.

There are lot needy people in our region. Doesn't matter if more beggars come there since there are lot devotes who are willing to contribute some part of their earnings. the management have taken proper action to reduce the beggars from blocking the roads and I feel this is the best way of distributing food and the collected money to the needy.

    St Lawrence bless us
