Another attack: Sikh man shot in US

Updated

Washington, Mar 5 (IANS):  A Sikh man was injured when a masked gunman opened fire at him in front of his house in Washington after telling him "Go back to your own country."

The victim, who was hit in the arm, survived the Friday night attack, the third shooting of an Indian national in the last 10 days in the US.

The attacks have claimed two lives and shocked the nation.

The 39-year-old Sikh, who has not been identified by name, was working on his car in front of his house in Kent city of Washington state when the gunman described as white, who had his face partially covered, opened fire at him, police said.

"We're early on in our investigation," the Seattle Times quoted Kent Police chief Ken Thomas as saying on Saturday morning. "We are treating this as a very serious incident."

According to KING5 TV, the incident was being investigated as a possible hate crime and police had reached out to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for help.

In the recent spate of attacks, Harnish Patel of Lancaster in South Carolina, was killed on Thursday, and Srinivas Kuchibhotla was murdered on February 22 in Olathe, Kansas.

Another Indian, Alok Madasani, who was injured in the Olathe attack, survived.

Satwinder Kaur, a candidate for Kent City Council, said on Facebook that the latest victim "wishes to remain anonymous at this time. So as a community we should respect that". She said Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke has reached out to him.

"This incident is such a big deal because hate crimes to this extent do not happen in our community," Kaur said.

Sikh community leader Jasmit Singh told the Times that the 39-year-old was released from the hospital.

"He is just very shaken up, both him and his family," Singh said. "We're all kind of at a loss in terms of what's going on right now. This is just bringing it home. The climate of hate that has been created doesn't distinguish between anyone."

According to Singh, Sikh men in area around Seattle have experienced "a kind of prejudice, a kind of xenophobia that is nothing that we've seen in the recent past".

Before the Kent attack, the Sikh Coalition had released an advisory asking the community members to report instances of people "saying hateful things about your Sikh identity".

In the aftermath of the Kansas attack, the coalition said: "We should not wait until someone gets hurt or killed to report hate incidents."

Kent is about 30 kms from Seattle and is near the Congressional constituency of Pramila Jayapal, the Indian-origin member of the House of Representatives.

Jayapal tweeted: "Thoughts and prayers to family and entire Sikh community in the wake of horrific shooting. This must be investigated as #HateCrime."

On Thursday night, Patel was shot outside his house in Lancaster.

Officials do not believe it was a hate crime. "I don't have any reason to believe that this was racially motivated," county Sheriff Barry Faile said on Friday.

In the February 22 Kansas incident, an American, Ian Grillot, who tried to stop the shooting, was also shot and injured.

A white Navy veteran Adam Purinton, 51, was arrested and charged with murder in the killing of Kuchibhotla. Purinton reportedly said that he had shot two Iranians.

The hate crime has been condemned by leaders in both the US and India.

In his address to the joint session of the Congress, Trump last Tuesday said: "Last week's shooting in Kansas city reminds us that while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms."

At a news conference in Washington on Friday, Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar said he had discussed the Kent incident with administration and Congressional leaders during his visit.

Jaishankar earlier met Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and House Speaker Paul Ryan.

"What we heard from very high-level, cabinet level that we should regard this as an act of an individual," he said.

"The American justice system was at work, it could bring the perpetrators of this act to justice. It is being prosecuted as a hate crime."

Hate crimes have been a part of the American fabric, including in the liberal state of Washington.

In Auburn in 2012, a Sikh taxi driver was attacked by a man who thought he was Muslim. The attacker was sentenced to three years in prison for the crime.

In 2015, Hindu place of worship in Kent, the Sanatan Dharma Temple, was attacked and had its windows smashed and the word "Fear," painted on it.

Another Hindu temple in nearby Bothell was also attacked.

Neither of these hate crimes were condemned by former President Barack Obama or the media.

The hate campaign let loose by a political party during the Indian elections to polarise votes on communal elections brought about a communal divide in India. Little lessons were learnt by people like Trump who thought that whipping up nationalism as the main election plank won him the elections but divided the electorate never before in US history. It will take a long long long time for the wounds to heal. God save America.

Everything can't relate directly to Trump's policies. Some opponents taking advantage of the situations Washington state chose democrats over republic, They violently protested and attacked their opponents on the road during and after Trump's victory for many days.

Anand what secured life you are talking about? Here we need to take goons' permission to choose our dress, to choose our food, to choose what we speak and what we express. Here people would lynch me for what I store in my refrigerator, would assassinate my character and sham my family for what wear, would term me anti-national for I speak even though it is within the parameters of the Constitution. So what is secured here? People would chastise me and even burn me if I cross into or worship the 'God' of the Upper Castes, I may lose my life and if me and my family reach the temples which we are not supposed to, we would be banished. My daughter should take permission from uneducated, uncultured goons to wear what she wants, to visit her friends from other communities, to attend parties etc, even though as a parent I don't have any issue with these things. Even if my daughter is allowed to go out, even for work, I am not sure she would come back safe without getting molested, humiliated and abused! I am even scared to send my little daughter to school, because one of the non-teaching or teaching staffs may molest her and outrage her modesty. Even after marrying her off, I am not sure, she won't come back after facing domestic violence. Worse is that I may even find her hanging from the ceiling or being burnt alive because I did not fulfill all the conditions of her husband and his family, because I paid less dowry. I don't even know I would come back safely home after my work, because some fanatic might have planned to bomb the train I travel or market I visit or the hotel I go to. Yet I and my family ventures out every day hoping that all these bad things, violence may happen with someone else and not with us. That's the only hope of security that 'let it happen with others but not me'.

I know all this does not happen with everyone and on everyday. But whenever these things happen, the first thing I am worried is for my children, my wife and my family.

    Mr Santhosh,
Remember there are cultures across world which are far ferocious imposing and having people with a delusional thought that they are entitled to rule this world. that is divinely commanded. A latent force that becomes potent and commanding and forceful when numbers get to their favor. I am an agnostic in belief since my childhood. as per me, there are flaws in every major religion in this world and they are supremacist. So to choose an environment which one wants to live is very difficult. we are forced to cope and see lesser evils. sometimes I feel the goons you refer to are hedges against bigger evils taking their space sometime in years ahead. Per capita crime gives a better picture to choose the place where we can comparatively be safe. However, as your concerned with the safety of your lineal descendants, you have to extrapolate to see the movement of demographics and how they are likely to affect you

The time has come to realize where are we safe and who are our friends.when the fish head stinks then ,no need to realize rest is too is gone.why no actions are taken before from govt.when two people were attacked and shot dead. Now in a daily basis we hear again one more os shot.?Not only indians ,but other nationals too are will be the next. They think our nationals are look like some muslim brothers ,from Pak,or elsewhere so they are afraid of these people. They have experienced attack in a very bad way.so we have to be careful now ,I still shivered as I heard this attack although I am far away.Hope Trump takes serious steps to stop and punish the one who shot but immediately. My sympathy to the deceasedone and heartfelt sympathy to the family.
