Video: Abducted Kerala priest Fr Tom in bad health, pleads for help

Aden, May 9 (Reuters): A Kerala priest kidnapped after an attack on a care home in Yemen's southern port city of Aden last year has appealed for help in a video recording carried by a Yemeni news website.

Father Tom Uzhunnalil, who hails from Kottayam, was abducted in March 2016 when four gunmen posing as relatives of one of the residents at the home burst inside, killing four Indian nuns, two Yemeni female staff members, eight elderly residents and a guard.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack and the motive for the incident was unclear, but Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi has called it an act of terrorism.

"They are treating me well to the extent they are able," the white-bearded Uzhunnalil said, speaking slowly in English.

"My health condition is deteriorating quickly and I require hospitalisation as early as possible," he added in the recording carried by Aden Time (www.aden-tm.net) news website.

The date April 15, 2017 was written on a cardboard pasted on his body.

Uzhunnalil said his kidnappers had contacted the Indian government and the Catholic bishop in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates with their demands, but the response was "not encouraging".

"My dear family people, do what you can to help me be released. Please, please do what you can to help to get me released. May God bless you for that," he pleaded.

The authenticity of the recording could not immediately be verified. Aden's minority Christian community have largely fled what used to be a cosmopolitan seaport before it became a conflict zone.

During an all-out civil war in March 2015 Iran-aligned Houthis advanced on Aden, forcing the government forces to flee.

A Saudi-led Arab coalition has since helped local fighters expel the Houthis, but security in Aden has not been fully restored.

    Dear readers,

Imagine yourself in the position of Fr. Tom, would you have considered it blessed to be dying in the hands of captors that asking for a ransom that will be used for further terror activities ? Fr. Tom is a priest who dedicated his life for the service of God. No person of such robust will, will ever plead for a release earned out of paying the terrorist groups. As such, it is impossible for us to believe that the one in the clip is truly the abducted priest.

Our contributions, whether through taxes or offerings to the Church services, are there for a purpose better than funding for killing innocent people. Therefore, do not compel the Church authorities or Government bodies to surrender to their demands.

Pray, dear people, pray for true news, though it could be a very painful one. And pray that God strengthens people who keep faith in Him to receive whatever news may be, whether the people are biologically related to Fr. Tom or through faith.

We have seen prayers have not worked till now. Even Fr.Tom has lost hopes in prayers. Only option is to pay the ransom amount and get Fr.Tom released.
Do not give justification like ' being blessed to die in the hands of terrorists', for our inability to get him released.
We have to compel the government to perform to fullest to get a fellow Indian to safety.
We can partner with UAE and Saudi to tackle the terrorists later on if required.

those who disagree can you find a solution rather than just praying and commenting. It is no where written that in order to get salvation you need to suffer. what has happened in sysria iraq especially innocent kids dying for no fault of theirs. Do we allow them to go such suffering just because we are safe.why can christian countries who are majority in world intervene and find a solution. Do we have any solution now??

First and foremost I pray Almighty for the early release of Fr. Tom.

We may have whatever political difference of opinion either on Congress party or BJP party but it's not at all good to criticize our honourable External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraji, as she being a loving and caring human being.
Everytime, whenever there is any person in distress, she will be the first person and has done her best to give helping hand to the needy. Let us appreciate it and not try to undermine her name. By her virtue of saving peoples lives, she has brought smile on so many families and made us Indian proud...

She will come to rescue anybody irrespective of any religion and that too Fr. Tom is a priest and she will have a high esteem to the priest. In so many cases, she has proved her ability and concern to come to rescue of people who had been trapped for so many reasons.

I am sure in Fr. Tom's case, she must have tried her best and who knows are what are difficulties to release the priest from bondage?

Therefore, whoever I may be whether I support Congress or BJP, let's all forget our differences and unite in her mission to resuce Fr. Tom and extend our full cooperation and not the least our prayers for the priest well as Shushma Swaraji.

It appears the Government of India reacts only when there is an appeal from Fr Tom. There is a need for continuous efforts to get his release. The CBCI should set up a coordination desk and interact with the GOI for his release.

Sushma Swaraj and UAE Bishop Paul Hinder are honest in their approach to release Fr.Tom but the situation is abduction of Fr.Tom is very complicated as there is no specific know source whom to approach in that failed State of Yemen.Blaming either Sushma or anyone else wont help, even though Sushma is BJP(communal party) she is honest as far as helping those Indian who are in trouble outside India and I have fate in her that she will get Fr.Tom release if she really know the real kidnappers of Fr.Tom.Lets pray everyday for Fr.Tom health as well his release at the earliest.

I do agree with Mario/Dubai about Sushmaji. She is a person with full of Compassion and love. Though she belongs to BJP, she does helps people irrespective of caste, creed and operates with humanity. It is wrong to say that being head of external affairs ministry she is not doing anything to release Fr. Tom. I am sure she must be trying her best to release Fr. Tom through her Government. I urge all like minded people to pray for Fr. Tom's release and I am sure our Government will succeed in getting Fr. Tom back soon.

Sushma Swaraj is fit to be a KG teacher that's all. Even the household ladies can do what she is doing. But this is something very high level and not her cup of tea nor have seen any BJP doing this type of extraordinary fete except of course giving very extraordinary fake Bhashans. Same way what has happened to Kulbhushan Jadhav. Kept the whole issue in dark. Paid media is not saying anything.

I agree very much with Chandan Kumar.

It could be that Fr. Tom is not alive anymore and the one existing in the video could be an impersonator. The video could be a trick to elicit money (in a very huge in volume) to use for further terror activities.

Please do not blame the government, all matters are not in the hands of us humans. If it were, our soldiers did not have to sacrifice their life day and night.

I do understand the pain of Fr. Tom's family members but when we give our brothers to God's service, we bid good bye to our family relationship with them as they are son/brother of the entire Christian members in the world. I say this with personal experience, having relatives working as missionaries in various war/naxal infected locations.

Please people, pray for true news about Fr. Tom, whatever it may be, and do not support paying ransom that will be utilized for killing innocent people in the world.

Its so sad that Fr Tom is still held in captivity. There is gross inaction of the church and Indian government. The church was in a better position to secure his release through diplomatic measures, explicitly which was not forthcoming. Time is running out and Church should do something immediately other than prayer to secure his release. What is the use if only his family members are worried and not the church. behaviour of the church is something like Fr Tom preached different Jesus. Stop the lethargy, spring into action.

Indian Govt, before the start of the conflict, during initial stages of the conflict and in the mid of the conflict made multiple pleading with the indian community of the Yemen to come back, initially own their own and later with the help of the daring indian rescue mission.Sadly many individuals chose to stay back, now people with accuse Modi Govt not helping minority community. and That's very SAD.

Flop Indian foriegn policy. Sushma Swaraj can only make headlines over already solved issue of employees just to be in limelight. She can not even go close to Fr Tom, Kulbhushan Jadhav etc, unless some other entity makes things easy for her and then ever ready to take credit.
