Mangaluru: Incessant rains - Main roads in city flooded, traffic hit

Mangaluru, Jun 5: Though the onset of monsoons has delighted the people of the city, the same cannot be said of the civic issues that incessant rains have given rise to.

It's just the beginning of the monsoon season. Hardly a week has passed since the first rainfall, but the roads, both arterial and bylanes, are already flooded.

Take the instance of the road at Balmatta around Dr Ambedkar circle. One of the most important junctions in the city, the stretch was choc-a-block with traffic on Monday June 5, with artificial flood that was nearly knee-deep filling one part of the road, apparently because of poor drainage that blocked the rainwater.

While the vehicles struggled to pass through, it was the pedestrians that had to bear the brunt. It was a hard task for pedestrians to wade through the water, holding on to their umbrellas and at the same time negotiate the traffic if they had to cross the road. Catching buses was no easy task either.

The sight was not very different at some of the other places in the city too, such as Hampankatta, Nantoor, PVS circle, Attavar and others. Water also entered several shops near Attavar. Worse, water has filled in several pits dug up on roads sides, because of which pedestrians have been put at risk.

At Bajal, garbage was found strewn all over the road because of the rain and winds. School children were put at much difficulties because of the flooded streets.

Certainly Mangalore is on its way to become a smart city. This is the proof. Our politicians and administrators are busy planning how to siphon the funds allocated for the Smart City project. They have forgotten that de-silting the drains is an exercise the administration needs to carry out before the rainy season. Blaming incessant rains is not the remedy. Its a shame to see the heart of the city flooded. Spending thousands for crores on concreting the roads and not spending enough on constructing footpaths and storm water drains is the reason for this chaos. It is high time we boot our inefficient administrators and politicians who are interested in photo ops during inauguration of new schemes and not bothered about proper execution of existing ones.

Welcome to Namma Kudla, welcome to this season's 01st heavy rain falls & welcome to hard reality.!! Blame game starts, it's Congress or BJP, who ever planned roads n built them are to be blamed for not having fore thinking about city's weather conditions and topography. Engineers who designed should have thought of proper walking footpath, proper drainage facilities. I am sure these engineers lack proper knowledge and thinking as well. MCC should have taken care before rains if drainage systems are proper and are in order.
With city being close to Concrete Jungle, water clogging will be an issue we will have to deal with. Instead of spending few crores on new projects, plan proper Rain water harvesting in city and I am sure we will have more than enough water for any hot summer.
Let us stop fighting over cows and calf, who eats what, who meets whom n where and who does what in public. Let us use our thinking n planning towards a better city . Let us act as be better and more responsible citizens when it comes to civic sense. I am sure few of u slack basic civic sense when it comes to public property, let us all join hands to work towards a better tomorrow.
MCC officials n concerned authorities kindly ensure some things is done soon, before we have any major unfortunate incident.!! Wake up people please.!!

No doubt that Mangalore is developing. Their are constructing drainage & footpaths everywhere. But, to my surprise, they did not leave any drainage opening on the side of footpath for water to enter the drainage. What kind of engineering is this? India is producing thousands and thousands of engineers every year. What's the use????

Earlier days water from the streets used to go to peoples compounds and sink to the ground. Nowadays there is concrete everywhere. Concrete Roads and no place for the water to drain. There should have been a larger capacity storm water drainage system in place or mangalore will be like Mumbai during the rains.(I think it already has).
All the streams have been encroached upon. According the researchers these were once rivulets. People have been treating these as gutters and therefore all this mess.

What is the point in blaming administration or schemes of govt. We as citizens have to change our mindsets. Look at the roads with so much of garbage flowing everywhere! Who is responsible for this? Administrative representatives are one among us. So unless we change nothing is going to change!

Like it or not we are all to be blamed too for this mess.

    1. Firstly the corporation needs to plan well and ahead of the monsoons.

    2. While the corporations job is to open the drains it is the publics social responsibility to not block the drains with waste in the first place

    3. We need people who have proper sense in civic and city planning

    4. Stop building and encroaching drains - how can builders and public encroach these spaces. These places are as sacred as temples, churches or mosques because they keep the water drains free and protect lives. Further they prevent such inconvenience

    5. Finally we'll need to have both public and political will to make sure these things do not happen in the first place.

We see this every year and comment and blame Modi, Sonia, MCC, Corporators, CM, MLA............ but sometimes look into yourselves and u will see that we are also part of the mess and we also have ourselves to blame.......

People of mangalore are loosing thier trust on mcc because mcc is not able to fulfill the needs of citizens of mangalore... the drains are allready old model and out dated. When there is so much development taking place in and around the city, why cant they have some new methods to avoid artificial floods during this season, people are fed up with such problems in the city... for example kudroli road widening is going on since many years still work is going on an on an on.... when its summer season work cannot be done because there is no water in the city and naw monsoon season city is full of water so work cannot be done...

Today's rain in only a fraction of heavy rainfall that normally Mangalore can experience. We never had any such flooding of roads few years back. The situation has become so bad because:

Drainage is inadequate. Neither the width nor the depth of gutters is designed for the rain.
More building activity has come in obstructing free flow of water.
Corporation is busy with new ways of making money and new excuses for raising taxes. They have no time to looking into need for cleaning the choked drains.
Politicians are busy putting up show by inaugurating new projects and not bothered about suffering of people.
The flooding in rural surrounding of Mangalore was much less. It is the city which is affected most. What are the authorities doing? Probably thinking that problems will get solved on their own.

Congress does not have basic sense of ruling or managing situations. In summer, there is no water, they plan water rationing. During monsoon, once the city is flooded, they shift the blame on to local corporate! !!
Now there will be funds being allotted for emergency cleaning of drainage and 90% funds will go gulum! !

What is the system and what are they planning. No proper garbage disposal, no proper drain water and sewage disposal, no proper water supply pipelines as a result we see pipe burst and supply water leakage during summer. Are there people in MCC taking salary and doing sloppy job plus so much damage and loss to our smart city?. Is our smartness and intelligence only limited to the books?. We are very poor in applying it practically and utilizing our scientific knowledge to upgrade our lives but we are ever satisfied with walking around with big degree tag and behave like philosophers and advising and impressing others.

Nice to see good rain & poor infrastructure planning. Thanks to the Smart city planners.
After seeing this artificial flood its clear that there is no proper arrangement made for water to sink naturally.

I still do not know why government is planning to bring a Desalination plant ? Are they planning to loot crores again in the name of H2O ? Or to bribe money by providing Jobs from young graduates ? Or are they planning to turn Mangalore city like DUBAI (Deserted and Artificial) ?

Just curious enough to know what they are planning for!!!

Every day is surprising to see that our highly respected elders (almost many politicians & Officers n Rest) are too bad,I mean the people who are just 20-30 years older than me,Am 28 currently..I guess they are just very hungry for money and to spoil the nature so that their future generation should suffer.

Shame on those. And I don't bother to say this. They are really shameless. They don't do what is actually needed.Instead they create one more problem to fix the old problem. Are they really educated.Do they really think the future of city ??? I Doubt! This is for everyone not just MODI :)
