Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 6: A person complained of chest pain and later breathed his last when being taken in police vehicle to a hospital on the night of Sunday June 4. The deceased had been taken to police station for questioning, and he was about to leave for home when he experienced acute chest pain.

The deceased was Melwyn John Concessao (39), a resident of Bolpugudde, Kavoor. He is survived by wife and a daughter. Melwyn was working as supervisor for Mugarody Constructions firm since the last 13 years.

At around 9.30 pm on Sunday, Melwyn along with three of his relatives including a woman were seen consuming beer near Maravoor bridge. Someone who saw them alerted the police, after which some personnel from Bajpe station visited the spot and took all the four in their vehicle to the station after informing the the family of one among them.

Within sometime, Melwyn's brother Lawrence reached the police station, after coming to know about the incident. The police questioned all the four before writing down their names and addresses. During this period, Melwyn, who was seated in a chair, complained of chest pain, held his chest tight with his hand and collapsed. Police personnel immediately took him to hospital but before reaching the hospital, Melwyn passed away at about 11.45 pm.

After the judicial magistrate conducted inquest as per procedures, postmortem of the body was conducted in government Wenlock Hospital here. Although it is almost certain that Melwyn died of heart attack, postmortem report is awaited to confirm the same. A case of unnatural death was registered in Bajpe police station.

Deputy commissioner of police, Dr Sanjeev Patiland Panambur assistant commissioner of police Rajendra visited the hospital. City police commissioner has ordered internal inquiry into the incident as the above death occurred when the deceased was being taken in police vehicle. He has appointed deputy commissioner of police (law and order), K M Shantaraju, as the inquiry officer.

The one who alerted the police is to be blamed for the mishap. How mean he is. If they were not creating nuisance in the phblic, why was he bothered? If you drive down late in the night, one can find many drunkards on the street, some even lying flat on the road. Such cases need to be reported. If that person is aware of Melwyn's death, he needs to compensate the family for the loss.

What a sad insident.May his soul rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathy to the family.I am sure his heartattack has nothing to do with his questioning in police station.Because at his age many men get heartattack.may be he already had some blood pressure ?If I am not mistaken his weight was also cause of high cholestrole? Then comes his some drinks ,and was very hot summer heat adds to that.Thats my theory. It was only a coincident he was taken to police station, and some hot discussion with police made his BP go high and then a attack was not to stop.Had someone there on the spot given him a immediate heart massage, and a mouth to mouth breathing ,he would have definately survived ,till a doctor comes to him or a ambulance ,with oxygen. So poor is our system .It shows we need really some new system in health dept, instead of rushing to the hospital immediately. It costs important minutes which patient doesnt have.or call a doctor immediately who can visit him there and give treatment,How sad.

All police station CCTV camera must. Everywhere cameras installed why not in police station. Whatever police is doing everything is right?. In this case also if you see CCTV footage you will get clear picture otherwise people has to listen to police... Whatever they are saying is right.

I thought it is mandatory for police stations to have CCTV 24x 7. If CCTV was on, we can get a clearer picture.

May be this happened due to shock. In most of the cases heart attack happens when a person is mentally disturbed and tensed due to this blood flow suddenly increases due to fear or anxiety. And if there is a minute block it is sufficient for heart attackAs the episode mentions he was having alcohol with 4 people including a woman. And his relatives were informed. As he was a married man he must have felt ashamed or embarrassed or thought how to face his wife or relatives and now media also very fast broadcasting any activity in a front page. There was time gap from 9:30 to 11:30. After thinking all this he was in full tense and hence the tragedy stuck. This is what I feel.

Often police just want to assert their importance. They could could have at most checked with them on the spot and let them go. That is why often police don't have time for tackling real crime.

Since there was a public complaint, police had responsibility to visit the spot. However, as these individual did not cause any harm to any one and did not cause violence, in my personal opinion, the police should have warned them and asked them to move away to their own homes. Taking them to a police station just for asking a few questions - does not make any sense. They could have asked those questions on the spot and wound up the matter. Perhaps no bad intention was there from either party; it is however a great loss for the family. The Post Mortem report should put to rest any doubts that may have arisen from this sad demise.

Do we have freedom in India? I think no. What's wrong with drinking beer anywhere outside?

Someone has commented about drinking inside 4 walls of our home. If i can do whatever inside 4 walls of my home why do i need any freedom?

I have been in Gulf. specifically UAE. I can camp out near a beach for a whole night and nobody will question me. Can we do that here in India? You would be taken by cops whether you were drinking beer or not.

    Dear all,
He consumed liquor around 09.30 p.m. not a.m.
    &
    Didn't disturbed public peace.
so what is reason someone is complained abot him & police took quick action although our police are not taking quick actions without any strong evidence or strong backup from influenced persons.

This is really weired and foolproof for some bizarre things are happening in our country....

This incident also reminds us of the 2015 Dadri mob lynching in which a mob of villagers attacked the home of a Mohammed Ikhlaq, with sticks and bricks, who they suspected of stealing and slaughtering a stolen cow calf. Later, he died in that attack and Mohammed Ikhlaq's son, Danish also seriously injured.

Why police has to take him to police station for such a silly thing.People drink openly in Goa and so many wine shops serve liquor in the shop although they are not allowed to do so. Police wont act in such illegalities , but only act against common man.

This is utter nonsense.... Drinking beer even in public is offence? Maker of beer Mallya can abscond from this country easily but drinking beer is offence in our country? Both people who made complaint and particular Police Team should be punished because we lost one young citizen
