Bengaluru: State wants Centre to declare parts of NHs as local roads to help liquor shops

Daijiworld Media Network-Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Jun 8: The state Cabinet on Wednesday, June 8 decided to write to the union government to declare some stretches of national highways passing through cities as local roads. The move is intended to bring relief to liquor shop owners on and near national highways.

If the central government approves the state’s proposal, it can allow the liquor shops located within 500 meters of state and national highway to operate freely without facing any legal hurdles. Recently the Supreme Court order had banned the sale of liquor in these shops effective from July 1.

According to an estimate out of the 6,572 kilometres of national highways in the state, 858 kilometres pass through urban pockets, including city corporations, city municipal councils, town municipal councils and town panchayats. The state government wants these parts of highways to be declared as local roads.

The proposed plan could help 70% of the 6,018 outlets, including bar and restaurants, from being shut or relocated by July 1.

accordingly CM siddu should request central govt to convert the nationalised bank as state co-operative bank. so that state govt can waive off the agricultural loan. so that he can fulfil the farmers request. why the congress is not ready for that?

Union Government should not take this Karnataka government request seriously... If the highways are converted into City Roads then these road will turn into swimming pool and dirt track like we see near Jyothi circle because state government will never spend money on up keeping of these roads....

I DONT MIND DRUNKARDS DIEING OF NO DRINKS RATHER THAN INNOCENT PEOPLE DIEING DUE TO THESE DRUNKARDS

This statement by Nidderammayya clearly shows how liquor lobby is
    controlling govt
Further it shows govt attitude towards ppl
Apex court gave its order to benifit people and state govt trying to avoid
extend that benifit to general public
After all khangress mentality make money at the cost of ppl

Please Include surathkal to thokottu stretch and nanthoor to gurpur stretch in this plan. The NH66 is cutting through mangalore and causes inumerable problems to the residents that live alongside this road. Since Mr.Gadkari has already sanctioned three bypass roads that could be used to bypass mangalore (mulki BC road, Thokottu melkar road etc.) the existing stretch of road should be converted back to its original state as a city road.
