Puttur, Jun 30: In a tragic incident which happened at Korikkar near Jarathar in Ariyadka village in the taluk on the evening of Wednesday June 28, a young man, who is said to be mentally unstable, killed his uncle by hitting him with the back of a hoe's handle.

The victim of the incident was Devayya (56), who hails from near Madikeri. The youth was Ratan, resident of Jarathar. During investigation, police were told that Ratan would have attacked his uncle with a hoe when there was no one at home.

Devayya from Karagunda in Madikeri taluk had arrived at the home of his younger sister at Jarathar, Shekhamale, in Ariyadka village on June 24. Ratan, who is said to be suffering from bouts of depression, used to be very fond of Devayya. Ratan, who was generally disobedient to others in the family, used to listen to the advice given by Devayya. Therefore, the family often asked Devayya to visit them to cool frayed tempers of Ratan.

On Wednesday, Ratan's father, Sundar Gowda, had requested Devayya to be at home with Ratan as he had to attend a religious programme at Kalladka. He went away with wife and Devayya's son, Ganesh. When the family members returned in the evening, Devayya's body was found lying near the hearth inside the bathroom. His head was found to have been broken. The family thereafter filed a complaint in the rural police station here, expressing suspicion about the involvement of Ratan.

The family of Sundar Gowda had shifted its residence to Jarathar a few years back after acquiring land there. It is said that Ratan has been under treatment since long for depression. The police have taken Ratan into custody. Rural police have registered a case and investigation is on.
