Udupi, Jul 12: A pedestrian was killed by a speeding bus near Lakshmi Venkatesh Temple (LVT) here on the night of Wednesday July 10.

The deceased, aged around 50 years, is yet to be identified.

It is learnt that the pedestrian was crossing the road carrying a load of scrap when a private bus plying from Kundapur to Bengaluru hit him while trying to overtake another vehicle.

It is said that as it was dark, the bus driver failed to notice the pedestrian.

Eyewitnesses said that though he was lying on the road with critical injuries to his head, no vehicle stopped to take him to the hospital. The ambulance too was delayed. Finally, on receiving information, social worker Vishu Shetty rushed to the spot and took the injured man to hospital, where he was later declared dead.

The police have taken the bus, belonging to Anand Travels, into custody.
