Saudi Arabia vows new Islamic alliance 'will wipe terrorists from the earth'

Riyadh, Nov 27 (AFP): Saudi Arabia's powerful crown prince vowed to "pursue terrorists until they are wiped from the face of the earth" as officials from 40 Muslim countries gathered Sunday in the first meeting of an Islamic counter-terrorism alliance.

"In past years, terrorism has been functioning in all of our countries... with no coordination" among national authorities, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also the Saudi defence minister, said in his keynote speech at the gathering in Riyadh.

"This ends today, with this alliance."

The summit is the first meeting of defence ministers and other senior officials from the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, which officially counts 41 countries and identifies as a "pan-Islamic unified front" against violent extremism.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

The alliance was announced in 2015 under the auspices of Prince Mohammed, whose rapid ascent since his appointment as heir to the throne in June has shaken the political scene across the region.

The alliance groups largely, although not exclusively, Sunni-majority or Sunni-ruled countries.

It excludes Saudi Arabia's arch-rival, Shiite-dominated Iran, as well as Syria and Iraq, whose leaders have close ties to Tehran.

Sunday's meeting coincides with an escalation in tensions between Riyadh and Tehran, particularly over wars in Syria and Yemen and the political structure of multi-confessional Lebanon.

Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of supporting armed groups across the Middle East, including Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah and Yemen's Huthi rebels.

The meeting also comes as several military coalitions, with backers including both Iran and key Saudi ally the United States, battle to push the Islamic State group from its last remaining bastions in Iraq and Syria.

The alliance meeting in Riyadh brings together Muslim or Muslim-majority nations including Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Uganda, Somalia, Mauritania, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen and Turkey.

Retired Pakistani general Raheel Sharif has been appointed commander-in-chief.

The alliance aims to "mobilise and coordinate the use of resources, facilitate the exchange of information and help member countries build their own counter-terrorism capacity," Sharif said.

While the alliance officially includes Qatar, which is the target of a six-month boycott led by Saudi Arabia, organisers in Riyadh said no Qatari officials were present at the meeting.
Qatar's flag was also absent.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain abruptly cut diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar in June, accusing the emirate of being too close to Iran and supporting Islamist extremism.

Qatar denies the allegations.

Egypt, which sent a military official and not its defence minister to the Sunday meeting, is reeling from a Friday attack on a mosque that killed more than 300 people during prayer time.

While IS has not claimed responsibility, Egyptian authorities say the organisation is the main suspect as the mosque is associated with followers of the mystical Sufi branch of Sunni Islam, whom IS has branded heretics.

Prince Mohammed said Friday's "painful event" was a reminder of the "danger of terrorism and extremism".

"Beyond the killing of innocent people and the spread of hatred, terrorism and extremism distort the image of our religion," he said.

Since his sudden appointment as crown prince, Prince Mohammed has moved to consolidate power, announcing crackdowns on both terrorism and corruption.

A corruption purge saw around 200 Saudi elites including princes, ministers and business tycoons arrested or sacked earlier this month.

Prince Mohammed and MODI??!!!! Sorry, what an awful comparison bro!! Where is development? Crackdown on corruption? do u mean DEMODITIZATION which is already proved as the most ineffective and extremely disastrous. foolish step in Indian economy?
India, which is the blessed land with various natural resources, amazing IT hub today badly falling down in every sector, and Saudi proved it's efficiency by its growth 80% even in non-oil sector in a desert!!!
Modi's gov't has just Crackdown on poor cow traders, Tripple talaq which is weakened by Islam itself, rarest in today's society (Myself and the people I know never witnessed 1 incident until today but just heard about it). It'll take a whole week to mention each and everything of Modi's contribution so.. some other time.

    Not exactly...

Some time ago there was a request for Pakistan to send its soldiers for a ground invasion of Yemen. After giving the matter some thought, the Pakistani government refused.

Reason of refusal: fearing an upheaval on the domestic scene (as Shias would oppose it vigorously, and potentially causing a civil war in Pakistan).

Some on the requesting side were shocked at the refusal, and said that Pakistan would pay a big price for refusing the request.

So what we are seeing now is the Pakistanis still joining to do the dirty work - but not as part of the official Pakistani Government errand. Kind of a mercenary force. But this won't be the first one in the region.

Good that you are going to build new Islamic alliance. But ISIS is backed by some strong Muslim countries who are also supported by some Super powers who have vested interest in the destruction of Arab economy. The task is not time bound and may take years but has to be executed to one day.

Terrorism actually spreading by the anti islamic forces by creating fear mongering about believers. A leader who slept for three days to allow 2000 muslims to get butchered got best civilian award by saudi govt is also an example of petrol diplomacy wchich also an isult to islamic ummah. FEAR OF ISLAM SHOULD PREVAIL IN ANTI SOCIAL ELEMENTS cannot be confused as terrorism. Its islam said alchohol is haram and dangerous to health but a liquor businessman will definitely say that its terrorism to follow that dictat.

Don’t you think the best way forward is to actually ditch this medieval concept of God and religion? There is absolutely no evidence for existence of God and ample evidence to the contrary to prove the ideocracy of each of major religious scriptures. So, why do you even need God to lead a normal peaceful life.

I was born a religious person simply because my family were practicing a particular religion. Ever since I have reached an age of reasoning, say 12 or 13, I have stopped practicing any religion and do not pray to any God. I have spent a perfectly normal peaceful life for several years since then.

I know that it is not easy to comprehend that your life long conviction to God / religion could all be a lie. For most religious people, logic and rational simply stops when the question God / religion is involved. I know that nothing I say will shatter your conviction.

Please do not keep repeating the same old stuff again and again, it means nothing to me.
It all comes down to the same fundamental question - WHERE IS THE EVIDENCE? Neither the holy scriptures nor its interpretation by Zakir Naik constitutes an evidence.

I am not from a science background. In fact, my formal education in physics, biology and maths ended by tenth standard. If God and religion were meant for the masses, then those scriptures must first pass a common sense and logic test. And to tell you frankly, every major religion’s scripture fails that test in the first attempt itself.

I do not know much about physics, but my mobile phone works and I still take the plane to go overseas; I do not know much about biology, but a surgeon fixed my broken arm 5 years back and the vet doctor injects something to impregnate my cows; and I do not much about chemistry either, but a rat poison still kills the rat in my farm and the metallic paint prevents corrosion of my car’s body.
I certainly do not claim to know the science behind each of the six examples noted above. But they certainly pass a common sense and logic test to me that SCIENCE ACTUALLY WORKS.

Could you please tell me as to what exactly has God done to you to prove his existence?

And even if I accept for the moment that God exists the way you claim it to be, why do you have to go through all the melodrama that goes along with that belief? Say for one year you choose not to fast during Ramzan or celebrate Eid, what exactly would be the impact on your life and on everyone else? Would the sky fall off? Or would the sun rise from the west?

Several years ago Pakistan had the largest Islamic conference ever held in the world. They invited ALL scholars from each and every different schools of Islam who came to Karachi to answer one single question "Who is a Muslim or what is a definition of a Muslim" . These scholars deliberated for 5 days and finally left without agreeing on a definition. Imagine, deliberating for days on one single question and they finally leave without a declaration.

To become a Muslim one has to say the Shahada or the declaration of faith, which states "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his Prophet". But as the Ahmadis say the Shahada, but on account other religious beliefs there was growing pressure on the Government of Pakistan to declare them as non Muslims. Sharp differences arose between the Sunnis and Shites, when the Sunnis wanted to declare Shites as non Muslims too. This was because in the Shite's in their declaration of faith add an extra line "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet, and Ali is his successor"

Hence, the first step to have real lasting peace in the Islamic world is the two main groups the Sunnis and Shite's need to settle their differences and learn to co-exist peacefully. The next step would be to get the remainder of the sects together. The final step would be to examine “Why do people kill and get killed with the sole intention of becoming a martyr and going to the Islamic heaven”

If you have read between the lines, most of what people claim to be prince's ideas, he himself has attributed them to his father.

He may be a no more than a spokesperson/action-man for his father's ideas. King Salman has led a very disciplined (corruption-free) life while demonstrating very modern thoughts.

I fully agree that Muslims themselves have borne the brunt of most terrorist activities in the last three decades or so. Even within Pakistan, thousands of ordinary folks like you and I have fallen victim to this senseless violence. Who can forget the butchering of 130+ school kids in Peshawar in 2014?

But what baffles me is the official silence of most of these countries. And that was the first part of my question.
