Puttur, Dec 22: Padmavati Alva from Bolody in Kedambadi village in the taluk has asked Kedambadi gram panchayat to recommend for giving permission to herself and her husband to end their lives along with two daughters. "We have our own house. But the brother of my husband is not allowing us to reside there. Since a year, we have been approaching police and other officials for justice, but we have not got any help. On the night of December 19, we were driven out of our home. We want to commit commit suicide en masse. We therefore request you to recommend euthanasia for us," she said.

Padmavati Alva and her husband, Padmanabha Alva, live with their two daughters, Prjana and Pruthvi, at Bolody. There is dispute between Padmanabha and his brother, Sundar Alva, over the ownership of the site. A case has been registered in rural police station and the enmity has been in operation since a year.

It is gathered that the police had asked the family of Padmavati to visit the station relating to the case on December 19. In response, Padmanabha Alva went to the station with wife and children. By the time the family members returned home, they saw that Sundar Alva and Giridhar Naik had broken open the lock of the door and illegally entered their home. When Padmavati wanted to know why they came into her house, a verbal friction arose. Thereafter, Padmavati, her husband and daughter, Pruthvi, stayed at a lodge in the town.

Padmavati said in her letter that going by her experience so far, she has no faith in getting justice through police and other departments. "If the panchayat cannot do justice to us, it should recommend for euthanasia for us," she has requested.

Panchayat president, Praveen Shetty, held an emergency meeting of the gram panchayat members on Thursday December 21 to discuss the application filed by Padmavati. The meeting unanimously decided to extend full support to the harassed family of Padmavati. Many members said that it is tragic that a family had sought permission to end their lives together.

Vice president, Asma, members, Krishnakumar Rai, Vijayakumar Rai, Koranga, Pushpavati, Chandravati, Revati, Lalita and panchayat development officer, Ajit, were present at the meeting.

What a strange request! Let alone a panchayat, even a court cannot entertain a request for euthanasia. It is good that all the panchayat members resolved to lend their support to Padmavati - they should go further by breaking the new locks put by the estranged brother without a court order giving him the right of ownership, and put new locks with keys given to the legally occupying owners. Then let the legal process take its time.
