Maharashtra Transport to Induct 2,500 New Buses

Mumbai, Jul 23: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will induct 2,500 new buses of varying standards to its 15,600-strong fleet, a statement said on Friday. The decision to initiate the fleet modernization programme was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

MSRTC officials informed that the Chief Minister that the organization had earned profits of Rs 230 million in the past two years. The new buses would be eco-friendly running on compressed natural gas, and would include mini buses, luxury and semi-luxury buses, the government announcement said.

However, the cost at which the new buses would be acquired and the time-frame for the exercise was not specified. MSRTC, which operates transport services to the most remote corners of the state caters to over 6.5 million passengers daily.
