Mangaluru, Jan 28: In an incident which happened in the early hours of Saturday January 27, a person who was trying to break the Canara Bank's ATM attached to its Valencia branch here, ran away after seeing some journalists.

At around 12.30 am on Saturday, a person wearing a burqa was sitting near Canara Bank's ATM at Valencia under circumstances which evoked suspicion. Journalists working in the office located in the upper storey of the same building came down at that time to go home at the end of their duty hours. They saw this strange person moving about near the ATM. Sensing danger from watchful eyes of the journalists, the man ran away from near the ATM.

Bewildered by this strange behaviour, the journalists went inside the ATM and found that an attempt to open the ATM had been made. They informed the police after which police personnel from both Kankanady and Pandeshwar stations arrived at the spot. The policemen appreciated the presence mind of the journalists which they said, had averted this theft.

Sniffer dogs and finger print experts also visited the spot. Investigation into the incident is continuing. OnSaturday, city deputy police commissioner (law and order), Hanumantharaya, visited Canara Bank's Valencia branch and obtained details from branch manager, Linet Pinto. A complaint about the theft attempt was registered in Pandeshwar police station.
