Puttur: City gets Rs 63 crore drinking water project

Puttur, Feb 9: Deputy project director of 'Jalasiri' scheme, Prabhakar Sharma, informed that considering the expected requirement of the city for the next 30 years, an integrated drinking water supply project costing Rs 63.11 crore has been sanctioned and that work on this project will begin within three months from now.

He was speaking at a programme for keeping the public informed, organized by the city municipality on Thursday February 8. City municipal council president, Jayanti Balnad, presided.

Sharma stated that this project had been drafted in 2014 and that the project is being aided under Asian Development Bank funding through Karnataka Integrated Urban Water Management and Investment Scheme. Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation will be implementing the project. Initially, a detailed project report had been prepared with an estimated project cost of Rs 42 crore. With GST and price hike, the project cost has now spiralled to Rs 63.11 crore, which has already been approved by the city municipality here, he explained.

"Out of the total cost, 60 percent would be contributed by the state government, while 30 percent will come from Asian Development Bank by way of loan. The remaining ten percent has to be met by the municipality. The government has approved the project, and process of online tender has begun. This process will end in about 60 days, and work will begin in three months. All constructions are expected to be completed in 30 months and after that, the contracting firm will maintain the same for eight years," he added.

Senior member of the ruling party in the municipality, H Muhammed Ali, in his introductory address, blamed KUDCEMP for improper implementation of the drinking water project in the past as a result of which the city is facing lot of problems on this front even now. He wished that mistakes of this kind will not recur during the implementation of the current project.

Design engineer of the project, Praveen Rego, explained about the details the entire project including various stages of its execution. People also came up with questions and suggestions. Municipal councillors, Rajesh Bannur, Vinay Bhandary, Ramanna Gowda Halanga, Shyla Pai, Jayalsaxmi Suresh, Zohra Nissar and several others were present.
