Mangaluru, May 9: Two unidentified persons travelling by a motor bike tried to kill fishermen's leader, Deepak Kumar (48), near Colonel Garden, Boloor here on Tuesday May 8. Deepak, who is from Bokkapatna here, was attacked by the strangers with a machete but he escaped with only an injury to a finger on his left hand.

At around 2 pm on Tuesday, Deepak was moving in his motor bike to the boat yard when two persons seated on a motor bike approached him from behind and suddenly flashed the machete at him. Deepak had providential escape as the attack would have been deadly, and he sustained only minor injury.

The incident, some feel, may be linked to Deepak's opposition to illegal activities carried out by some vagabonds at Bokkapatna. Locals too had supported him and complained to the police after which the police had conducted raid. The young boys had a grudge against Deepak Kumar relating to this incident. Therefore it is assumed that these boys would have been behind this attempt on the fishermen leader's life.
