Moodbidri, May 10: Three persons who have been accused of abetting the suicide of a woman through mental torture were taken into custody by the town police here from Kanhangad in Kerala on Tuesday May 8.
The accused have been identified as Aslam, resident of Neeralke, Gantalkatte within the municipal limits here, Rameez Addur, and Muhammed Harris. Another accused, Umarabba, is absconding.
The lifeless body of Kairunnisa (22), wife of Aslam, who was a native of Neerealke, Gantalkatte, was found hanging from a rope in her rented home in Kallabettu near here on April 11 this year. The police found that the lady's husband, Aslam, and father-in-law, Umarabba, had gone missing and their mobile phones had been switched off. This development gave rise to doubts about their role in this death.
The police who brought the three accused to the town from Kerala, questioned them. They confessed that Aslam, Umarabba, Aslam's sister's husband, Rameez Addur, and Aslam's cousin, Muhammed Harris, mentally tortured Kairunnisa as a result of which she got frustrated and ended her life.
Aslam had married Kairunnisa from Ammunje near Bantwal four years back. The couple has a 30-month-old daughter. Aslam used to sell fruits and vegetables in a mobile van.
The arrests were made by police personnel led by police sub-inspector, Dejappa, under instructions from town police inspector, Vijaya Prasad.
