Mangaluru: Man held for trying to sell spurious gold as genuine

Mangaluru, Jun 7: A person was arrested from near Yes My Shop fancy store at Thokkottu here and fake gold ornaments weighing about 900 grams were seized from his possession on the night of Tuesday June 5.

The man has been identified as Praveen Veera Rathod (21), son of Veera Ratanlal Rathod, resident of Mansar, Nityananda Nagar, Ramtek, Nagpur, Maharashtra. He has been accused of trying to sell fake ornaments to the general public by claiming them to be genuine.

It is said that the accused along with some others, had approached Lokesh Kumar, owner of Yes My Shop fancy store in Hariprasad Complex, Thokkottu, at around 8 pm on June 5. The visitors reportedly claimed the ornaments in his possession to be genuine, and tried to sell gold ornaments worth about Rs 30 lac for just Rs 3 lac. Kumar grew doubtful about the authenticity of the ornaments and complained to Ullal police station, duly providing them information about Praveen Veera Rathod.

Ullal police have registered case under sections 420, 511 and 34 of Indian Penal Code against the accused.

Police say that Praveen could be a member of an inter-state gang that is involved in cheating innocent people.

The case was detected by Ullal police inspector, Gopikrishna K R, with the assistance of complainant, Lokesh Kumar. In addition to police inspector, Gopikrishna K R, Ullal police sub-inspector, Vinayak Torgal, was involved in the operation which was conducted under the directions of city police commissioner, Vipul Kumar, guidance of police deputy commissioners for crime and law order as well as leadership of southern subdivision assistant commissioner of police, K Rama Rao.
