Udupi, Jun 19: A day-long workshop on police complaint authority, victim compensation scheme and problems faced by police in their routine duty was held at conference hall at SP’s office Bannanje here on Tuesday, June 19.
The progrmme organized under the aegis of district administration, District Legal services Authority, Bar Association, police department and department of Indictment and Settlement of Disputes, Udupi.
After the inauguration, district and session court judge and president of District Legal Services Authority, Udupi, Venkatesh Nayka addressing the gathering said, “Police are like a bridge between law and public. Police are the saviours of maintenance of law and order. The court requires valid proofs. There is a gap between police personnel and prosecutors. It is due to frustration and ambiguity. This gap should be removed. Ultimately, success and failure of the case depends on the prosecutor. Police plays a crucial role in projecting figures in crime proceedings. Coordination and cooperation is required between each other.”
Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis complimented the police department for their duty during election. She said, “This is a workshop for all to relieve their frustrations and to get relief from pressure of work. There must be coordination between the three departments.
“In Udupi, there is mutual understanding and coordination between advocates, police department and Women and Child Welfare department. Hence, many women have got justice in very less time. Coordination is increasing which is a good sign.
“Complainants seem like culprits these days. Many doubt that police are involved in cases and they make deals. They should handle complicated incidents with care. The police department must be people-friendly and target oriented department,” she said.
District superintendent of police Laxman B Nimbaragi said, “Police, law and media are mutually dependent on one another. The first phase of justice is the police department. After the FIR, the case will proceed to the judicial part. Likewise, petitioners will get justice.”
H Ratnakar Shetty, president of Bar Association Udupi, also spoke on the occasion.
The workshop will have five sessions a day. Each sessions will have different subjects like 'Role of investigators in criminal cases', 'Protection of Child rights', 'SDPS cases', Stress management and police complaint authority', and 'Victim compensation scheme', which will be conducted by different resource persons.
Latha, senior civil judge and secretary member of District Legal Services Authority welcomed the gathering. SP Laxman Nimbargi rendered the vote of thanks.
