Daijiworld Media Network – Kannur

Kannur, Jun 26: The much awaited Kannur airport is all set to be opened for public in September later this year. After a meeting with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, union minister for Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu announced the opening of Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL).

The Rs 2,292 crore worth airport, located at Mattanur near Kannur, is fast nearing completion on a 2,330 acre land. With a 95,000 sq mtr terminal building, this airport will become the 8th largest terminal in India. With this airport, Kerala will have four international airports with three others at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

While Kerala state government has 35 percent stake in the airport, public sector undertakings has a share of 25 per cent, 10 per cent with the Airport Authority of India and the remaining 30 percent is with cooperatives, banks and individual shareholders.

The airport is situated 25 km away from Kannur and Thalassery railway stations which gives easy connectivity and transport. The four lane road from the airport which connects to the national highway passing through Thalassery, Iritti, Taliparamba and Kuttyadi will give new direction for development and township culture.

The airport has been equipped to operate code E aircrafts like Boeing B777 which will be soon ready for operation. The airport will also support code F aircrafts like airbus A380. With 6 aerobridges and 48 checking counters, the airport is expecting a million passengers in its first year and 5.08 million passengers by the year 2025.

According to sources, the airport will start off with a runway of 3,050 metres and in another 18 months after it opens, it will see its runway length increase to 3,400 metres and eventually it will touch 4,000 metres, making it one of the four biggest airports in the country.

    Ronald,

Agree with you - especially the linguistic issue where inefficient MP's are hampering new upcoming potential MP's to bring new change and improve the brand image of Mangalore. This mentality of depriving change needs to change. More emphasis should be given to firebrand personalities, the likes of John Lobo, Oscar Fernandes, Ramanath Rai and the likes of U. T. Khader who can breathe new life and turn around and restore the glory of Mangalore. There is no hiding the fact that Keralites are 100% literate than us Mangaloreans. They are more broad-minded in their thoughts, actions and deeds unlike the leaders of Mangalore. Unfortunately, even the literate leaders who are well educated are never given an opportunity to rise, and in the processs subduing themselves.

Unless we rise to the occasion, we will never be able to meet our cherished dreams of making Mangalore a dream city and in the process continue to forfeit our ambitious dreams.

All is not lost for Mangalore! Kannur airport is 25 km away from the city. Unfortunately we are electing inefficient MP's for several decades some of them can not even speak proper sentence! Wish next election a better MP like Vinay Kumar Sorake is elected, a highly capable and educated politician! He can restore the glory of Mangalore. He did a master plan development and implementation in Kaup, though he lost sadly in the election due to false rumors and negative propaganda based on religion! All airport related authorities should be invited to Mangalore Airport now during rainy season for live observation of chaos. Starting from incoming passengers screening with one scanner, luggage delays, chaotic vehicular movement at the arrival and departure, awkward reversing and turning of taxis and private vehicles, there is no direct lane for movement and unscientific road divides, poor condition of exit road to the base, Surprisingly...this airport keep receiving some awards on regular basis...!! Congratulations!!

Congratulation for the citizens of 'God's Own Country'. A tiny state with real people's participation four International standard Airport with one of the modern Jet capability land is great achievement.

While in Mangalore Air India Express Flight 812 from Dubai to Mangalore crashed on May 22, 2010. Of the 160 passengers and crew on board, only eight survived. In our state we are still thinking of extending the runway on tabletop land even after the fatal crash. Other than Bangalore which is built ICAO standard the state is largely depended upon other states.

I would suggest Karnataka must build one in Hyderabad Karnataka border, Mumbai Karnataka, in Central Karnataka catering to the Domestic needs which should be further improved International standard as the passenger volume increases.

Sadly, Kerala is taken over Coastal Karnataka in development when our politicians busy in Dharna, Moral Police, cow vigilantism. Ironically BJP is in power since 1991 in Mangalore for last 25 years and Civil Aviation Minister also once elected from the party.

If the service is good, fare is competitive than Mangalore and domestic connectivity time saving, I don't mind trying this airport in the future rather than waiting long in Mangalore for single baggage for an hour Customs hunting for Gold treasure for pat scanning outgoing passengers who must have forgotten smiling for long time.

ultimately, with very few passengers, daily flights will be once in a week flight, then if any major setback to airlines, then no more flights. RIP mangalore airport. For 100 years, they will talk about runway expansion. The most feasible and sensible solution is to build a mega airport somewhere else. Cargo and so many other potential lost because of senseless decisions.

On the positive side Coast Guard Academy is shifted from Kannur to Baikampady. Bajpe airport should be taken over by Airforce/Navy/Coast Gaurd for certain amount, until which a green field airport should be developed near Padubidri where plain land is available and is the ideal location for international airport.

Kerala really needed one more airport for they have lot of NRI's and people working at far places. Patronizing flights over other modes of transport is rapidly increasing over the period by time conscious people.
Business at Mangalure Airport might reduce, but we should learn to be self reliant and sustain our infrastructure.
Train and Bus passengers traffic also might also reduce to some extent.
Improving Mangalure - Bangalure connectivity and construction of fast moving highways to places like Karkala - Hebri and beyond will help to get more passengers and Cargo to sustain the growth of Mangalure Airport.
Many of our people are time conscious and can afford flights but from Airport to their village, road connectivity is very poor. Saved time gets wasted, which deterring them from patronizing flights. Our Govt at Centre and State can definitely make necessary corrections in these areas.

Excellent news for mangalore, this way all of those north keralite will use this airport instead of mangalore and people from coorg and mangalore will also opt for this due to a large number of services and destinations facilities to happen from this airport, the only people might find a bit difficulties are those from udupi karkalla district as north Karnataka can use Goa airport with similar facilities. this way we can preserve mangalore and its greeneries and culture though we live in tribal time yet we have the option provided by neighboring states. I hope the development will encourage most of them to move to Kannur and ksd areas so that the concrete juingles also reduce a lot in mangalore and related crime rates. Good news and good luck Kannur and I wish the labor union there soon become rich mans job.

Mangalore is realy going backward. Moral policing; communal issues, attacks on minorities who likes to travel there. It is a shame. All communal bandits has to learn a lesson in a hard ways so that they will stop creating mess around only when no food on their table. Now big traffice of international travellers from kerala will be shifted to kannur. Many major international airlines will fly kannur similar to blore. It is easy for Evan europe and North American travellers to fly through that rout for cheap fairs
