Bangalore, Oct 7: National Alliance of People’s Movement (NAPM) leader Medha Patkar and CPI (M) politburo member Brinda Karat have demanded a CBI enquiry into the Church attacks in Orissa and Karnataka.

They were addressing a massive rally organised under the banner ‘Save Democracy Save Secularism’ by Bangalore Citizen’s Initiative here on Monday.

Patkar said that it was the strategic plan of BJP to create a vote bank in all the states where it was in power. “There has not been a single forcible conversion. It is a clever poly of the Sangh Parivar to annihilate all other religions in India. Nurturing one’s cultural traits is everybody’s right. Those who want to negate such right have no place in India,” she said.

Patkar further added that secularism did not only mean ‘giving equal status to all religions’ (sarva dharma samabhava); it also meant being tolerant to other religions which the BJP and its affiliated militant organisations were systematically trying to destroy. “Freedom of religion basically is a freedom of conscience which our constitution upholds. No one has the right to question when someone wants to follow his or her conscience,” she re-iterated.

CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat said that there had been partisan approach as regards dealing with terrorists. “Those who infuse fear among people in the name of religion, destroy places of worship, rape and kill people are all terrorists. They all should be punished. Both the Central Government and the State governments have failed miserably in dealing strongly with such terrorising outfits,” she said.

Karat came heavily on the hypocrisy of the BJP which raised the conversion issue. “Real forcible conversion is taking place in Kandhamal in the name of Ghar Vapasi where innocent poor people are terroried to forego Christianity and join Hinduism. The state government has become a mute a spectator to their misery which is unfortunate,” she lamented.

All India Christian Council (AICC) president John Dayal held that protecting and defending Christians in India was the duty of all Indians. He sought all people of the country with secular mindset to give protection to minorities.

“There has been a conspiracy going on to wipe out Christianity from India. In Rajasthan they have a plan to throw out Christians by 2010. Similar is the situation in Kandhamal. But they will never succeed in their sinister designs, as all Christian bodies are united and we have great faith in our secular democratic State, “ Dayal said.

Earlier a massive rally of over five thousand people took a procession from the Government Arts College to Jakkarayana Kere. In a rare expression of solidarity, as many as 48 civil associations took active part in the rally.

This is done just to gain media coverage. because if one is fighting for Kashmiri pandiths , nobody is going to cover them in media(Thats the apathy of our media)

I kind of agree with Roby Mangalore's views on these two ladies. While I welcome Mrs. Karat and Ms Patkar's concern towards Christians, and appreciate the fact that they have given their support for a good cause and against the attrocities of Government Machinery. As expressed by manay, Karat and Patkar made most of their name in the media on opposing the development projects by citing reasons of envoirnment and relocation of poor people and thier land. I would be keen to know how much of real interest these two have got in the real poor people's welfare.

Moreover, the things are cooling down in Mangalore and people have slowly started to get back to normal. In this situation, again shouting slogans, arranging for protest march and provocative speeches may ignite more spark in the minds of people, hence leading to some untoward incidents by the miscreants. Central Governement is in a process of passing a resolution for the protection of minorities in India. Let's wait and watch what comes out from our Prime Minister next week.

May I request these leaders to go to Kannur in Kerala and Assam? People have been butchered there in communal violence. Also, how about going to Kashmir?

Kudos to all eminent leaders who are fighting for the cause of justice. We need such leaders who can raise the voice for the voiceless in the society. Be a voice of the voiceless. I am for justice, let justice prevail. Let anti-social elements be eliminated from this planet-earth. Let the communal party like BJP be crushed forever. Let humanity and human goodness live forever.

Politicians have failed to stop violence against defenceless christians who profess their faith by suffering for Jesus Christ. Reward will be there for those sufferers. Let the democracy keep on looking without doing anything. William

Who are terrorists- rightly said. I may also add- people who symphathise with these are also to be considered not only as terrorists but also anti- nationals. We do not want a culture which says its Ok to rape and burn a girl to death. we do not want a sympathizer who thinks this is right in th ealrger interest. Remember Milasovich ... remember Kradich... they were hunted down by their own government... Surely this will happen to all these people who are behind this political game ... who play with peoples lives... We dont need them ... these are the real terrorists.

These people really love India. They want India to prosper and not to diminish like Somalia and Afghanistan. We know the affect what happens to that country, when fanatics sit in driver’s seat. Fanatics drive us in to the ditch from where this country will not be able limp back to its original state.

Christians are only interested in contributing for the development of our motherland. Dear educated Hindu brothers, let us live in peace and harmony and work for the development of our country. I don’t think any of the educated Hindu brothers will support the monstrous act of rape and killing. These filthy uneducated, unemployed lots of Orissa have the intention of lust and loot nothing else. Conversion is just an excuse to fulfill their filthy desire which no religion will ever approve.

Anyone has done anything wrong to other religion we have law in this land. Have our elected Governments given the authority to these fanatics to apply their own law? If not, how a minister can say mistaken identity and mistaken action. It clearly states that the action by Bajrang Dal has the blessings from the government, where they made a mistake in identifying a certain community.

Why not all these people or leaders who are so influential can help to seek and fight for justice for all in a proper legal way? Any sort of help is welcome. But the help to seek justice should be full, complete and fast.
