Death of American Dream: Indian kills Family, Self in LA

Los Angeles, Oct 8: Shocked at having turned into a pauper from a millionaire overnight by the plunging American stock markets, an unemployed Indian origin businessman took the extreme step of shooting and killing his wife, three children and mother-in-law, before taking his own life in Los Angeles.

Karthik Rajaram (45), who once made more than $1.2 million in a London-based venture fund, was found dead in his Porter Ranch home here along with his wife Subasri (39), mother-in-law (70) and three sons Krishna (19), Ganesha (12) and Arjuna (7).

Authorities believe Rajaram, an MBA, killed his family and himself after seeing his finances wiped out by the stock market collapse, Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday.

"To us it appears to be a financial stake, a crisis situation that this man became embroiled in over the past few weeks," police said.

On September 16, Rajaram bought a gun. He wrote two suicide notes and a last will and testament. And then, sometime between Saturday night and last morning, he killed his wife, mother-in-law and three sons, and took his own life.

"This is a perfect American family behind me that has absolutely been destroyed, apparently because of a man who just got stuck in a rabbit hole," said LAPD deputy chief Michel Moore.

In a letter addressed to the police, Rajaram blamed his actions on economic hardships. A second letter, labeled 'personal and confidential,' was addressed to family friends; the third contained a last will and testament, Moore added.

Life has its own curves, ups and downs, no matter in which country we reside. We must have the confidence and friends to share and talk about. When we hit the hard spot, take the courage and talk to some one, there will be comfort and solution. We make money, we invest, and we loose money that is part of life. We must learn to live in richness and in poverty. My heart goes to those three kids, who have not seen life, and their lives were robbed by their father.

In the United States, a land of opportunity, with confidence, any one can suceed. After all prior to 1971, Indiana came to USA only with 8 dollars, it was not tragic, but they came with hope and confidence. I wish Karthik could have talked to some one and could have built his life again, he was only in the forty's. There was plently of opportunities for him. Money is not everything. We make money and loose money, but the life must go one. Killing is not the answer.

Karthik Rajaram is absolutely crazy ans psychologically ill to take away the life of his whole family and commit suicide. He is not able to co-ope up with financial difficulties because he lived his life on easy money. He does not understand that the LIFE is like a Metal in the Furnace at the time of difficulties. The Metal is heated and reshaped to any Mold we like and then a tool is Produced for the Purpose to use it. When our life is in hardship and difficulties we need to face it and shape it to use accordingly. In United States of America there are lots of institutes who are ready to help people during the time of Crisis.

There are different ways of earning and living. America is a place where you can be what you want to be. When we have money we think we are rich and we think of standards and status in the community. But when we get poor from richness we cannot accept anything. This is our weakness, we loose our temper, our interest and get depressed. Life has up and down. There are peaks and valleys. We need the courage and strength to face and pray to God to help us. After all we are human being.

Dr.Zeta Lobo has mentioned some comments about names of Karthik's sons. For ur kind information, name of a person doesnt make any importance. Its his bad luck. Name is to identify a person instead of calling him or her by say A, B, C, D, etc...Thats all.

He is a cowardly man, I have no sympathy for this man, He has no rights to kill his three sons, wife and his Mother-in-law. Its a Permanent solution for temporary Problem=called Suicide.

I heard he was a very loving father. May be he did not have the heart to kill himself and make his children and wife suffer. We Indians are in denial when it comes to emotional problems. I am sure he was depressed after loosing his job, and then he looses all the money in the stock market and just like majority of the Indian men thought he could fix it himself.

If only he had got psychological help this tragedy could have been avoided. Seeking help is nothing to be ashamed of. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

What a stupid thing Karthik has done. Loosing money in stocks/business is not crime. He had no right to kill others and even himself. This man did not have faith in God Who is our beginning and end. I don't think even Karthik has given any clue to his family that he is going to kill them otherwise at least they would have escaped. May Almighty God grant eternal peace to all the souls.Really I feel sorry for them.

Karthik Rajaram and his family is no more now....May Almighty Lord rest their soul in peace. Mr. Karthik has left us a message behind that we must refrain from gambling with all our money into stock market instead we can use a part of it.

Very sad to note that because of money loss six lives ended up so badly. May be Kartik could have not taken this step, if he knew "MONEY IS LOST - NOTHING LOST, HEALTH IS LOST - SOMETHING LOST AND CHARACTER IS LOST - EVERYTHING IS LOST". Having said that, I want to mention that the three boys almost in their teens would have grown up and started earning and lead a fruitful life. God may forgive Kartik and rest all of their souls in peace.

You guys should be ashamed of yourselfjudging other people. Instead of criticizing you should pray for each and every one of their souls. People are different and they deal with situations differently.

Whether you are born rich or poor, life throws several hurdles on your way whether you deserve them or not. It is not easy to accept catastrophic changes in life easily and ending one's own life and that of others' is not the best solution to the problems. Bigger losses mean deeper trauma. however, money lost through hard work and perseverance can be earned back, but once precious lives are lost they dont come back. having lost money and a precious brother.

I feel people ought to prioritise on people rather than money. Having said that i feel for the man who could see how bleak the future can seem when one loses all that one has! (Close friends give up on you and friends become strangers, the vice versa is also true)It is really sad that a man who is named Karthik and has ironically named his sons Krishna,Ganesha, and Arjuna the invincible gods! had to succumb to fate so easily.

Though I am sad for this incidence, this is perhaps the end result for many who invested all their savings in the stock market thinking they will become rich overnight. Investing most of your savings in stock market you may lose even your job which gives daily bread & butter because all the time your mind will be concentrating on stock market and not the job.

I am not saying one should not invest at all but limit it to the max 25% of your assets and live a free life because atleast you are left with 75% to carry on.

I dont understand why kartik has to kill his family and himself When there is always state to look after the poor in time of emergency needs (welfare system). But it is too late. we only pray for him and the family to forgive him.

The Victim Karthik Rajaram dont know how to face the problems in life. Its shame on his part. Anyway, he is no more. But, he has done a big sin by killing his own family members. He wont get justice in the court of God.

Very sad to read this, but suicide is not the ultimate solution for everything. There is nothing impossible for our LORD & SAVIOUR Jesus CHRIST. Keep trust in him. Let us share our problems with him, what ever let it be, instead of taking these kind of steps.

Shocking. Absolutely shocking! May be there could be other similar cases. It would be proper for all the people in similar situation come together and support each other morally and if possible financially to avoid such extreme incidents in future. Can not comment further on the incident but sad, very sad indeed. My condolences to the bereaved family members.May God give them the strength to overcome the grief.

There are thousands of people who lost millions, but they did't take the route of Karthik who lost 1.2 million. For him, that money was his God and when his God disappeared on a short notice, he took the life with the whole family.

Four decades back, I came to the U.S. as a student, I was hungry, without employment, walked through the dangerous streets looking for a job, but those bitter experiences of life made me stronger in life. I sympathize with him and feel very painful about the whole family. Life is filled with gain and loss, we must be prepared to face both at any time, and for them that trust in God, God will guide them through troubled path.
