Spain win European women's U-19 title

Biel (Switzerland), Jul 31 (IANS): Maria Llompart converted a penalty to give Spain a 1-0 victory over Germany in the final of the 2018 UEFA European Women's U-19 Championship.

The win here on Monday made reigning champions Spain the only team other Germany to successfully defend the title, as well as the first country to hoist the Women's U-17 and U-19 football trophies in the same year, reports EFE news agency.

Spain dominated from the start in front of 4,000 spectators at Biel's Tissot Arena and it was only the solid performance of German goalkeeper Stina Johannes -- with some help from the posts -- that prevented the Spanish from running away with the contest.

Playing their fifth consecutive final, Spain were relentless on the attack, but the score remained 0-0 going into the final 10 minutes.

It was then that Elena Julve drew a foul and Llompart scored on the free kick to settle the match in regulation.

Llompart and Julve, both 17 and teammates with Espanyol, were new additions to the squad.
